haha i dont see what the big arguement always is over c4 vs. c5. the c5 is the better car, end of story. that being said, ill keep my c4 because "I" like it better.
1. That 99 probably felt like your Taurus because it was used up as a vehicle. A new(er) C5 probably wouldn't have felt the same way.
2. As a comparison the WW2 fighters, your short ride at probably very pedestrian speeds would not bring out the best in the C5. WW2 fighters said the same thing at first about the P47 - until it was in its environment at speed - then it was this marvelous and nimble machine. Sort of like a C5 at speed.
3. The Taurus was always a family car that had family car handling dynamics. Sure the SHO engine helped it become more sporting, but you can only perfume the pig so much (take this as a truism from someone who used to work for Ford and was responsible for putting together the deal with Yamaha for SHO engines).
4. It's always difficult to "quantify" better when comparing cars. Would a 99 C5 (with enough mileage to only demand $13.5K) be a "better" car than my C4 - a 95 ZR-1 that's virtually a brand new car? Not for me. And from a value perspective - the most expensive C5 Z06 is a step down from the 95 ZR-1. But, the latest C5 Z06 is still more tuned to the typical performance enthusiast than the C4 ZR-1.
5. I'm actually surprised you might compare the C5 to the Taurus rather than the 81 Corvette you used to drive. The later C3s had much more of a boulevard feel than either the earlier C3s or just about any C4. The point about the C5 chassis development was to reduce the drama at low speeds to make higher speed cruising both possible and comfortable - something any racer would appreciate.

I fully understand what you are saying, but the 99 had fairly low mileage and had very good maintenance records, it was a VERY nice car and drove better than many of the higher mileage C5's I have driven. Again, I'm not making a comparison of the performance of a C5 to a Taurus, just the ride. I could easily have said a Malibu and it would be the same feel. I don't think anyone would argue that the C5 was designed for a more refined driving experience.
That's all I'm saying. (should have never used the Taurus). I like the car, just wished it felt like a C4.
Truth be known, I've been sitting here all day in front of the computer with a blown knee (grade III MCL tear, torn meniscus) unable to get around much since I got back from looking at the C5 so it's been a very entertaining way to spend an otherwise bad day, thx all!
I feel your pain on this one. I tore my medial meniscus about 4 years ago. I can't run anymore like I used to (was a 800/400 IH man in college and still loved to run interval 200s) due to that injury. Funny how I've probably been running quarters longer than anyone here - but actually RUNNING them.

I am glad C5 prices have come down. Otherwise I wouldn't be driving one. It always takes me a little while to like a new model. I am only 36 but when when the C4 came out I was like OMG they ruined the Corvette. Then it became my dream car. When I got my 89 Corvette I was extremely happy...I thought the same exact thing when the C5 came out...OMG they ruined the Corvette, then it grew on me and now I am driving a Mill Yellow 03 Z06 and I love it. When they came out with the C6 i felt the same way but it is really starting to grow on me. I spent a lot of time driving my boss's C3 (it was a 76) when I was really young. When I think about that i can't believe how much he let me drive it. It was awsome to be driving that car and thinking someday i am going to have one of these. The bottom line is it doesn't matter what Corvette you are driving...it is always awsome driving a corvette of any year or style. I still find myself looking at my glove box and just staring at the CORVETTE written on it and thinking, how lucky am i to be driving this car. I thought that when i was borrowing my boss;s C3, when i was driving my C4 and i do it today when i am driving my C5. I can only hope someday i will be staring at the COVETTE logo on the glovebox of a C6, 7, 8, and 9........and thinking the same thing.....we are all very lucky to be driving a Corvette

That's a good attitude. Always appreciate what you have. I have to admit that I am sometimes a little jadded with the whole thing (mostly in the off seasons when I don't drive my Corvettes). Sometimes I have to take a step back to really appreciate what I have:
How about this… My 04 C5 is a great beater with just over 140K miles and no issues (bought new in 04).
Just got back from a trip to Fla. And averaged 28mpg for the trip.
Do I like it better than the C3 or C4 no way it just makes a better DD.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I may do it. Price is getting too low to pass up, even for me. I'll just need some C5 expert to tell me how to stiffen the ride.......
Jon if it is a good deal and you like the car I hope it works out.
I am kind of tired of four wheels, I don't think I will never be satisfied with this car, and it will take many thousands to make it fun for me, I want to get a bike pretty bad, and they are waaaaay more fun than this car (most cars). in the end will be about 20K cheaper too. LOL
If only I could find a deal like IROC57 did right now, and sell some parts.

I can't part with the C4, more parking please................
Let's just get back to the basics....C5s are a bargain, C4s are great cars and really inexpensive, and Ford sedans shouldn't even be in the conversation. Like the country song, God is great, beer is good, people are crazy! Amen.
