My backup lights went intermittent to non-functioning this week. I've searched the forum about it and found the switch in the ZF6 is usually the problem. Everybody said they are pricey, but didn't say how much pricey is. Are they still available through GM? (I have a club sponsored discount through a local dealer) Are they any cheaper or even available through local parts places like NAPA, A. Zone, P-Boys, etc.? Anybody have the part # handy?
P.S. For you guys reading this, I found through searching the procedure, You can get it out with a 7/8" or 22mm deep offset box wrench from Sears. I'll be visiting them as well.
I can believe the largest portion of that would be the labor. It's getting way out of hand. I don't mind someone making a living, but they're starting to tear your head off. They want to make a days wage on every job they touch. I'll do it myself if I can just find one.
I've been doing some on-line searching today and have found the same pricing around the local parts stores.....$65 to $80 That's nuts for a switch. For crying out loud, it has a harness plug on one end and a ball depress activator on the other. What can be so special about that? Must be that word... CORVETTE.
Yes the part's a bit overpriced, but the installation is actually pretty easy if you know what you're doing. Be sure to get a 7/8" deep-offset box wrench and it'll be a breeze. Impossible to do without that tool though...
Went to Sears & looked at a 7/8" offset box wrench for $16 bucks. Then went to Harbor freight & bought a whole set of offset box wrenches for $14 bucks. I know, Cheap junk, but I've got nearly every other wrench that Craftsman makes already, and how often will I ever use these things again? I also won't feel bad taking a Dremel tool and cutting this cheapie to shorten it for clearance, if I need to.
O'Reileys has a lifetime warranty on their switch too, so the Dremel will get used to autopsy the old switch. I wanna see what's so special inside that thing. Gold contacts? My brother says I'm such a tightazz that when I fart, only dogs can hear it!

I got my reverse switch from him a couple of years ago and I think it was only ~$30. He's the man to know when it comes to these ZFs and a great asset to the Corvette community. He loves to give advice too so ask away when you talk to him. Good luck with it.
Klondike,
What you will most likely find out is that the switch is not bad. Take it out, clean it off and test it. I think what happens it that the steel ball gets a bit of corrosion and then does not make contact. Just rotate the ball and test it.
Now yours may be bad...but I had two cars do this to me. Not much fun getting the switch out and then back in....but at least I did not have to buy a new switch afterall.
I planned to do some sort of autopsy on the thing anyway. I guess I should investigate the problem first before I buy something I might not need. I think I can get it in and out without too much trouble. I've done things before that other people said, "You can't do it that way"! I've got LOTS of tools!

GO to the (DARK side) ZR1 part of the forum lots of good info and had the same thing happen on my son's ZR was able to test and get the help on install. We do have a lift which will make it a little easier.
This is my first Vette, and I honestly have to say, I've been under it more that above it when ever I need to work on it. Too bad they didn't come from GM with a built in lift. Push a button and they just rise up!
