Default '96LT4 Question

I'm trying to post a pic here. I'm wondering if you think there is any significance to the tread pattern on the wheel wells of this photo. The owner says he hasn't a clue what caused it, and he doesn't know of anything he ran over.

I'm thinking it could be coolant, which then leads me to all kinds of questionable causes. I don't like his reply, and trying to sell this car didn't bother to clean it up, makes me wonder... opinions??

First time I've tried this from Photobucket...

Do those marks show any sign of some sort of residue and are there similar marks inside the rear wells?

Part of the issue is he is running front mud flaps. So coolant and/or other liquids could easily be pushed up into the wheel well. My guess would be forming oil from a fresh chip seal on a road top and not cleaned up

Maybe ask if he had driven on fresh asphalt or freshly sealed asphalt.

Just throwing it out there....

Since it looks like the same exact markings on both wheel wells, I would guess it's something that he drove through.

If he drove through something there should be evidence of the same substance in the rear wheel wells.

Looks like there is a lot of silicone tire shine crap on the sidewalls of the tires. This stuff has a tendency to get thrown off while you are driving.

If it was leaking that much you would definitely see evidence of the leak either in the engine area or sprayed underneath. Can't usually miss the smell of coolant. I agree it was either something he ran over or sprayed on his tires. If he sprayed his tires usually it will fly over the doors and fenders also.

Agree...Tire Shine. Just go over the rest of the wheel well to make them a nice dark black. It is great for black trim pieces.

But why would the tread show if the sidewalls were coated with silicon? I would think he would have had to coat the tread but I doubt he did that-

If you put enough on the sidewalls, it's going to sling it off. When you make a turn, that tread pattern is going to be inside the wheel well.

I've seen it look exactly like those pictures. I assume all you have is that picture?
If you could actually look at the car, there should be that same residue on the side gills and lower door sides.

I've got to find out if the rear has the marks and ask him if he uses tire dressing...

Thanks-

It looks like tire shine however that being said.

I shine my entire wheels for shows that includes the entire tire, sidewalls, top of tire etc and it never looks like that. I use Stoner Tire Shine.

Perhaps he is using a cheap tire shine, spraying it in excess and the firing up the car and going for a spin immediately?

The mud flaps are probably doing it.

I also agree with Goldyclon. I'd have to see it up close. If it won't wash off with soap then Goldyclon is probably right.
