The "fast guy" method. Cut the headliner on three sides and let it hang down. Use 3M adhesive on the cork backing and follow the directions (let it set up). With a small roller and a popsicle stick, work the headliner back and under the frame.
Mine was sagging so I just pulled it off. The glue had dried and there was nothing holding it in except the top of my head. The board was in real good shape so when I replaced the material it was real easy. I actually used some pleather for a replacement. It has a lot more backing to it and it looks nice too.
Joe, to replace your headliner: take the top off and set it on something that will not scratch the top. As before, cut off the entire headliner...and dispose of. Purchase new headliner. Use 3M adhesive on the cork backing and let it set up. Install the new headliner and use a 2" roller and a flat 1/4" stick for pressing the new headliner under the frame.
Here is the top with the old headliner removed and the old dry glue etc. removed.
I taped off the edges before I went outside to spray the 3M adhesive. The material was rolled on and left to dry before I trimmed the edges. Total time was about 2 hours not counting the drying time.
Thanks guys!!! I understand now. My biggest problem was I didnt know if the frame had to be removed or not. Obviously not. Any other vehicle that I have redone the headliner in, you revome the trim and the headliner board drops out of the car. I appreciate your help on this. I have a 2008 C6. My mom passed in may of 2009 and left me her C4. I'm trying to restore it to good condition and I am learning that working on one of these vett's is unlike any other project. I'm sure that I'm going to need alot more help in the future. Thanks again!!
Oh, the peice of black trim that goes around the outside of the top. It has a couple of chips of paint out of it. Is this replaceable, or is it best just to get some black touch up paint?
I have inquired as to doing my headliner in the past with the forum and local companies that do headliners. I got a wide diversity of answers from them, one method as described in this thread.
And the other method of removing the backing as you indicated. This is how I have done other headliners in the past myself and would be the preferred method, but was fearful that I would probably break the foam. I have heard is it glued on real well. So I am hesitant to go down that road.
The safe way is keeping the foam on but then you just got to stuff the edges in real well and make it look good.
Looks like eagleye has done a nice job which might give me the motivation to do it also. The big key to being successful is to clean the foam real real well.

You can remove the Exterior Black trim piece by using a "Plastic" chisel to carefully tap the trim piece off. The metal trim piece is press fit and you must tap the top edge gently all the way around to loosen the trim piece.
The trim piece can then be sanded and painted with some "trim black" paint.
