The wave started by one driver swatting at a fly. The other driver thought he was saying hello and waved at the fly swatter. I'm not sure this version will check out on snopes but as far as I know, it could be true.
It's been said that the first wave occurred when the first 1953 Corvette #00001 passed by Corvette #00002.
Don't know if this is true, but it's a nice thought! And lets keep it alive!!!
I have always heard that somewhere in El Paso there was a dog in the 1953 Corvette #00001 and a cat in 1953 Corvette #00002. The owner of Corvette #00002 saw the dogs tail wag and thought, "What a nice doggie", and waved back.
The owner of Corvette #00001 thought the other owner was being friendly and waved back.
The cat of course was curled up in the passenger seat enjoying the sun and could not be bothered.
I have heard this from a very unreliable source.

Reason: Addition
I wave to them all.....most of the time they wave back. Sooner or later they will wave, gotta keep trying cuz if ya don't you know what happens.......nothin
I wave if I see another Corvette. I'm more concerned about keeping my eyes on the road.
I don't get upset if they don't wave back, maybe they didn't see me or they are keep their eyes on the road.
Seems like I notice other Vettes a lot after we've passed each other.

I am going to go out on a limb on this one. but here goes. Back in the old days.......1950s for you to young to remember you did not see a Corvette on every block like today. In fact seeing one was rare up until around 58 when a little over 9,000 were sold . That may sound like a lot of cars for some but Chevrolet only sold two cars. The full size Chevy and the Corvette. The full size Chevrolet sold near a million units. That was no small potato's but compared to a Corvette the public saw Regular Chevy's everyday. When they did see a Corvette it was a big deal. Stair out the window big deal. The best way for me to compare this by todays standards is with ( Don't get Mad) the Dodge Viper who's production was similar to early Corvettes. Whether you love Corvettes or not you must admit the early Vipers drew a crowd and made most peoples head turn. including Corvette owners ( Lets be honest) Thats is how I remember the early C1s. With all that said here is how I think the Wave started. Since it was rare to see early C1s on the road when the rare occasion arose and two Corvette owners pasted each other they would wave. So a tradition was born. Thats my spin, I will let the experts correct me with their version.
