ok-just started my 87 and drove approx 3miles when the service engine soon light comes on-then moments later the low coolant light comes on.seems like every bump in the road caused it to come on then off, but the engine light stayed on??um? got 95k on her and just did a tune up 2 weeks ago-checked coolant level and its fine -temp stayed 180-195 entire ride which was about 10miles.anybody?????
I know the feeling, I bought min and a couple days later on the way to testing, the service engine light came on, It did it 2 times, I just drove it, and added gas, that was a couple of years ago, no light since. I just got lucky I guess.

Pull the codes.....it will give you a place to start looking. A FSM (factory service manual) pays for it self with the first use.
The 2 lights are most likely, not related.
Check the connection to the low coolant switch, if it's clean and tight, you may just need to "pack" the cooling system.
As stated, pull the code(s) from the ECM, and post the number(s).
is the low coolant switch just below the rad cap? i see a green wire running from this switch down to the electric fan. how do you pack the cooling system?

Yes, that is the switch.
To pack the cooling system:
Loosen rad cap
start motor and let it get to operating temp (above stat opening temp)
Remove rad cap
Reach over to throttle and hold it open to about 2000 rpm
While holding throttle, add coolant until rad is full
Install rad cap
Release throttle.
great info agent 86- will check that out today.thx.oh while checking out that switch i noticed that it had 1 prong missing and when i pulled on it it came loose.i pushed it back in but a few drop of antifreeze did come out . started car and wasn't leaking. my question though is should that switch lock into the radiator with 2 prongs to make a seal?it wouldn't take a lot of pressure to remove by hand right now?i'll wait for your reply..thx's 1st87 out.

Your 87 may have a different connector than my 86. I don't recall ever pulling it off, but looking at it, it looks like a rubber boot with 2 small ***** within. I gave mine a squeeze, tug, etc, and it is on solidly.
Have you tried to pack the system, yet ?
