Well, I told him and he was decently pissed. He was glad I told him, and I still get to drive, just not whenever I want.
Way to man up. The ol' man may be a bit peeved...but trust me, he's a lot less pissed than if you tried to hide it or lied about it. Ya did good....Your old man cares about you....be glad.

Sounds like good advice. Defensive driving class may get the ticket dismissed, depending on where you live.

You're ready for it, you just need to cool your jets a bit and be more respectful of the car's capabilities. While it's not incredibly fast by today's standards, it has more than ample power to get you in serious trouble....or worse. Take some time to get to know it better, and treat it gingerly until you do.
You're already more mature than I was at your age. If I'd had a Vette at 17, I would have wadded it up in 3 months.
If you want to help learn to drive the car, I highly recommend finding a local autocross club that holds novice schools occasionally. The club I'm with does one annually and it's always booked.
I've driven rear wheel drive cars my whole live and I've broken tires loose more times than I can count but I've never been surprised when it happened, ESPECIALLY not on a dry road. You either know your car and can feel what it is doing (or about to do) or you don't. Unless you put the pedal to the floor and just blow the tires off, your seat of the pants gauge should know it is close to breaking loose WAY before it ever actually does. It should take about 1 time driving a car to figure it out. Just my .02
Although I'm calling Jon. You know the Taurus has has gotten away a time or 2.
tell whomever... but don't worry, I did the same thing when I first got mine... but didn't get pulled over, lucky me. Officer rolled up next to me at the next light, and I apologized, he accepted.

I'm guessing that you have little experience with the car. You might want to check into the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America). They have regions all over the country. They have a SOLO program that lets you "race" around a coned course usually in a BIG parking lot. There will be many helpful people there who would love to help you learn how to comfortably control your car.
Did I also say that you will be by yourself in a BIG parking lot with no police to hinder you. I think that it is a great way to learn when, how and how not to let that rear end slide out.
You shouldnt have confessed. You would have gotten 3 more goood weeks to do whatever you wanted till he found out.
I hereby award you the coveted Frizlefrak "Youth Role Model of the Year Award"

It's been three decades since I was a teen, but after my old man had tanned my hide for lying to him, that would have been the result. Fessing up would have resulted in a stern lecture and loss of the car for a week or two. The truth was always the lesser of the two evils.
I think everything is being forgiven, I'm pretty sure he realized it was inexperience that caused me to do that. I still can't drive it whenever I want, but I did get to drive it more than he said I'd be allowed to yesterday. Should fade away into a funny story with a good lesson sooner than I thought it would.
On a much better note, i put a K&N air filter in there, and my oh my do I appreciate the 4 extra MPG it gave me

Yes, one day you will be telling this to your own son(s) or daughter(s)
