Default Whats the odds????

I took my car to town to wash the wheels, left it running and decided to wash whole car. Not motor just outside.

Anyway it surged a couple times while washing. Got it done went out the highway about 4 miles. turned around at a crossover and started to open it up hit like 3500 when it died and coasted to side of road.

It hard a hard type crank to it like fast in time or out of time.

Think timing chain broke or distributor sucked in water???

My check gauges light also came on does that mean something maybe coded???

140,000 miles. But a buddy of mine seemed to think dist. cause said they had real good chains.. Any thoughts appreciated

What year vette you talkin' about? If you fill out your profile we will know what year you have.

Check your codes first before you start throwing money at it.

Before I launch into my troubleshooting repertoire, are you planning on doing your own wrenching or taking it to a mechanic?

if you sprayed the front of the car with water while it was running the fan sucked the water through the radiator onto your opti is my bet.

Guys, remember he has a '96. They can take getting wet from water if they are in good condition.
Now with that said, if the seal leaked then its going to get wet and cause problems.

There are plenty of guys here with these late model Opti's that actually wash the engine without any issues. I have washed my engine plenty of times.

Not saying it's not the Opti, just not gonna jump on the bandwagon too fast and say the Opti is toast if ya get it wet.

Correct however the key words are "if they are in good condition"

A friends gonna do it he used to work as mechanic for chev and now works for small dealer.
It acted like a car fast in time that's the same way it acted last time.

But I was wondering about other possibilities.

OK...then here we go.

They need three things to run, and three things only;

1. Suitable compression
2. The correct mixture of fuel and air.
3. A suitably strong spark delivered at the correct time.

That's it. If those three conditions are met, they run. If one is missing or deficient, they either don't run correctly or at all. Narrow down which is missing, and then why. Troubleshoot, don't guess. Guessing is fine if you have unlimited time and money.

I strongly doubt you suddenly lost compression unless you broke a timing chain, so let's concentrate on using a methodical method of troubleshooting. Start with the fuel element....attach a fuel pressure gauge to the schrader valve on the fuel rail, turn the key on but don't crank the car....tell me what the gauge reads.

Once we have that info, we'll go from there. Or you can let the guessing commence......

I'm betting you have an ignition / emissions issue too, but I want to rule out the fuel system first, and it's quick, easy, and free to check. Screw on the gauge, confirm 40 or so PSI, and then we move on.

- and do what Frizlefrak says...

BTW, i've got to ask - why did you leave your engine running while washing the car wash???

Left it running cause I was only planning on cleaning chrome wheels. Then they look so good I kept washing.

They called said compression good fuel pressure good and has spark. So. They think the gear on what I guess is optispark or I still call distributor. I forgot to tell them after it done it check gauges light was on called an told them.

Reason I came and asked a specialty forum is sometimes you all have experienced unique situations or think outside the box.

I had trouble with my Zx12 once and the shop instantly thought compression since I run so Much nos thru it.

So he run comp check and some other things on it and was kinda stumped. The Zx12 forum said tps I told mechanic he said they never go bad. I brought him a used one and paid him to install and set the voltage. Problem solved .

So I believe in the people.
