Default auto shift ****?

i'm changing the console bezel on my 87 auto. plan on keeping the shift leather and just unscrewing it from underneath. question is will the **** clear the slot opening or do i have to take it off? if so then how???

If you unscrew the boot from underneath, the console will come right off.

But if I remember right the **** won't clear. If you need to remove it, pry the button up with a small screwdriver, pry the snap ring under the button sideways, then pull the **** up.

If you unscrew the boot from underneath the bottom of the console the console lifts off and the boot and shift **** stay in place. At least thats how i did it, very easy and you dont have to pry anything, prying can lead to breaking so i go the safe way.
