Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum and looking for some help!
I have a 95 Vette with a Bose Gold Elite stereo system. The deck still lights up and holds all the presets and time display. Occasionally it plays fine but for the most part all I'm getting is popping and hissing. Iv'e heard that it's probably one of the pre-amps in one of the speakers, how would I confirm this? I would appreciate any help, thanks.

Hello Sheri, thanks for replying. I hear it from both sides all speakers.
that would indicate a possible problem with either the receiver section or the amp.
does the same thing occur when listening to both the radio and the CD player?
I had exactly the same symptom on my 92, I did the amps but it didnt fix it, Finally removed the bose unit and sent it to Dr DON, never a problem afterwards, besides now it plays copied CD's which didnt before.

It's that seperate tuner that was discussed earlier. It is basically the brain box of the system. The bose system comes in three pieces.
the Head unit, the CDM and the speakers/amps. The head unit tells the CDM what it's doing and sends the signal to the CDM, the CDM then processes it and sends this info to the speakers. The speakers/amps then amplify that signal.
That is why the system uses a 2 ohm setup. There is no actual amps being sent through the system. The speakers/amps pushes the power. The head and the CDM meerly sends signals.
That's it in simple terms.
but you do need that harness to make the after market compatible with a 2 ohm setup.

Thanks for the information. So what do you think my next step is? You said earlier that I should try to unplug one speaker at a time to see which speaker is bad. I've been told that if one speaker or pre-amp is bad none of it will work, is this true? I've seen replacement pre-amps advertised in Mid America Motor Works catalog, are they plug and play without any modifications to make them work? This is all original equipment the car has 49K original miles.
i have a suggestion.. but u should know that i am 'not' an automotive audio technician. i'm a recording artist, and my experience with audio technology comes from working with musical and sound studio equipment extensively for a number of years.
that being said.. it doesn't make sense to 'me' that if one speaker/amp fails, it would affect the rest. if i were told that, my first step would be to verify it before going further.
this link may help.. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/audio-electronics-20
This problem is a piece of cake to fix if you know how to solder correctly and have some technical ability to disassemble the speaker box. This link, post 1 will tell you all you need to know +even more.
If you are not up to the challenge send the speaker amp out to be fixed to “Factory Car Stereo”, or “Dr. Dons” for repair.
