Get some OIL OF PEPPERMINT. I got a little bottle at a one of those health & vitamin supplement stores in the mall. Put a couple of drops on some cotton ***** and put them under the car. You can suspend them from the frame rails or anything you want with pieces of scotch-tape. Rodents despise the smell and will stay away. This works in your garage too for mice. Just toss some soaked cotton ***** around in there every couple of months and they'll leave you alone. It's powerful stuff, so don't get it inside your car or house unless you love the smell of peppermint!
Thanks for helping me remember oil of peppermint! I used it years ago for the same purpose but had forgotten about it
Agreed on the oil of peppermint. I put a few cotton ***** under the hood, a few more inside the car. No problems! And personally I love the smell, like it better than the air fresheners you buy so I put a few drops in even in summer.
'bounce' dryer sheets keep mice and 'bushy tailed rats' (squirrels) out from interiors of my cars that are homeless...90% effective underhood...open the box, spread a few sheets around, leave the box in the car...i pull a few new sheets from the box at intervals as the smell does diminish with time.
When I used to story my Corvette outside I would stuff the tailpipe and air box with rags so nothing can get in there and then I surrounded the perimeter and engine bay with moth *****. Then a box of drier sheets inside the car. I heard drier sheets serve two purposes to keep rodants away and to fight moisture.
I didn't know the Bounce drier sheets worked for the rats too! I like the smell, nice and fresh.
I used them when I went camping a couple of years ago. Put a couple in my jacket pockets and hung up a couple in my tent at night and NO chigger bites and NO mosquitos. Don't like the smell of moth ***** at all, but they work for cats too.

my neighbour used irish spring handsoap. skinned a complete bar down to a platefull of shavings and left them on saucers on the dash and seats. car filled up with the smell the same day. 2 months later, it was still strong but no trace of squirrels or rats/mice!
There is a good website here in Tucson, http://mrpackrat.net/Packrats.htm, that talks about packrat prevention. I've had success with leaving the hoods cracked open and draping Christmas lights over the engine compartment. I buy LED Christmas lights because they do not generate any heat and use minimal power. I leave the lights on 24/7.
