I've got the original PKE fob for my '96. It works GREAT. But the plastic shell is falling apart after years of use. There are two significant cracks in the shell and the plastic portion that forms a hole for a keychain to go thru is broken off. Essentially it is now a fob that I carry separately from the keychain in my pocket.
I believe these can only be found on the 2nd hand market today.
Q: Anybody have any options specifically for repairing/replacing the 'shell'?
Thanks RollaMo-LT4 - that is an interesting thread. I sent the email addy a message - we'll see.
Last time I searched all I found for "PKE" was a ton of threads about how to program them, problems with programming etc and some used ones for sale here and there. None of which helps me.
Mine works great. The case or shell is showing it's age. Any used replacement will incur the cost of buying a 'complete' unit and will likely have same/similar age related issues. Heck a forum member got ripped off right here buying a 'used' keyfob just for the shell which turned out to be no good.
In a pinch - Black zip ties work well on the case. But I don't trust gluing the key chain loop back on - so just carry mine separate in my pocket.
Other possible solutions...
One might be able to slip a fat enough piece of shrink tubing over a portion of the keyfob.
I've seen some colored 'covers' for the C4 fob. They may just be for the front surface though...? Possibly could be glued on to cover cracks and create a 'new' loop hole for the keychain. About $15 or so.
I don't have any better ideas for fixing the loops once cracked/broken - plastic welding perhaps but it would likely turn increasingly into a 'Frankenstein' remote.
I briefly googled to see if the OEM (LECTRON PRODUCTS INC) may have made other cases for other automakers that might be dimensionally same/similar but nothing obvious jumped out. Besides they would likely be used/aged as well...
Obviously the ideal solution would be to obtain some brand new shells and pop the guts into it. That other thread gives me hope but didn't sound like there were any at present.
As said in the previous post the loop can be fixed. But if the case is passed epoxy repair, a new case might be needed. I have seen complete cases on Ebay and not too expensive. There not always there, you got to keep checking to see when they surface.
It always seems like there not there when you need them.
