I like the ET50 from MAC Tool, about $70. Simple and easy to use.

A shameless self promotion

• Reading trouble codes – reads DTCs of powertrain system including CAN, both pending and current DTCs.
• Clearing trouble codes – clears both pending and current DTCs.
• Readiness test – status of each monitoring system about I/M.
• Displays VIN.
• Includes OBDII generic mfg spec DTC CD and manual.

Price: $69.99 (USD)

Is this for a '82 vette? do they have a computer? just asking
You will need one that is OBD1.
the the ones at the auto joints are OBD II only. the combo OBD I and OBD II are really expensive. 299.00 and up unless you find one with connectors missing (and it is always the one you need)

I assumed it was for a C4, what are you using it for?

What year? I bought a $25 one about 13 years ago, for most Chevy computers.

96' OBD-II

the Older c4's are OBD-I, in which case I haven't seen a scan tool for (nor have I really looked)>

*edit*

BTW- Autozone will scan the car for you for FREE... I don't see a reason to invest in one, unless of course you just want the tool for the sake of having it.

you need an obdII scanner, and the one I got was $200, but works with every car. Who knows what kind of car I may buy next? doesn't matter, I have a scanner for it.

Hey I know someone who works for Mac Tools. I should check with him to see if there are any deep discounts for CF members

Actron Pocket Scan, ~$60.00 at Advance Auto Parts/ Auto Zone, etc.

Reads and erases ODBII codes.

Pays for itself after 1st use (if you consider most shops charge a minimu 30 minute scan charge alone).

I have one for OBD II but all it does is read codes and has the ability to clear them.

I have one that reads OBD I and that is all it does.

If you are serious about one, I have been looking for a Tech I,It was used by GM dealers and is bi-directional and obsolete.

reading codes is great , but sometimes it is necessary to activate the part in order to diagnose the problem

I've been thinking about getting a scanner, but I would like one that not only reads codes, but allows me to tweak some settings, in particular, the temperature at which the fans come on. I have a 96 also, and would like to change the default setting from ~225°F to 215°F for the first fan, and 225°F for the second fan.
What would be a good tool to use, or would it be better to take it to a shop to make the adjustments?
