Default 89 fuel sending unit

My 89 keeps reading full plus mpg are not working. Took fuel pump sending unit out last night took apart sending unit polished up the contacts got it working out side the car put it together put it in the car and it does not work took it back out adjusted it a little got it working it seemed fine put back in car quit working when I was driving down the road until I hit the breaks hard.Must be a contact problem I did not now if there was a replacement with out replacing the in tire unit.Seems kind of like a sloppy design.Looking at pics it seems like the later c4 had a different sending unit has any one else ran in to this and how did you fix it?Rob

I can fix it for $50.........or you can fix it for free.

The problem is that the resistor inside is not bonded (grounded) to the case. you need to add a ground wire to the resistor, then add a ground wire to the case to the tube.
You are losing the ground side of the circuit.

Might just remove the unit and use a brass bristle brush on the fuel level senders windings and contact point. I could be wrong - but I believe the ground for the fuel pump is the same conductor but sliced for the sender....fuel pump works right?
