Default Shift cable replacement?

My 1991 automatic Trans won't shift in or out of gear. After getting gas it felt odd putting into drive. I knew something happened. When I got home had to play with it just to get into neutral. I took the center console off; noticed shift cable seemed to be binding up. Put the car up on stands, found what seems to be the shift cable coming down farther to the rear of the car than where I lose sight of the cable from inside. When I pull the cable from inside the car, I get no response at the shifter mounted on the transmission. Seems to me the cable is bad. Does anyone have any experience with this type of problem? If so how hard is to replace? Any advice would be most appreciated.

I just did my cable a few weeks ago on my 87. There are 2 bracket bolts on the Trans pan also a clip there for the cable also. You have a clip to disconnect from shifter under console and a snap ring to hold it in place. There is a grommet with 3 screws holding it into top of the tunnel I found it easier to remove the heater controls to get my hand back in there to loosen. When I reinstalled I fed the cable in from the top slid it through the grommet before you start after you get screws in pull it back up and position it to shifter. Then place in park and re-hook to trans, park will be all the way to back of car. Be careful not to damage the snap right so it goes back in tight. It's a straight forward project I'm not sure how much of your dash you need to take apart on the 91 but that took more time then the cable on my 87.
