A neighbor of mine has a torch red 96 that he claims is a Collector's Edition. It has the badges on the front and rear, but not on the sail panel. He does have the Collector's Edition mats. It's equipped with the saw blade wheels, but has the Collector's Edition center caps. I hate to burst his bubble, but I suppose he would rather hear it from me than have it advertised for sale and then be eaten up by the people who know. Question, is there any way this thing could be real? Everything I find is they were all Sebring silver with five spoke rims. One other thing that shows up as being completely wrong, it's also badged as a LT4 but has an automatic. The car is done right, it's beautiful, but I don't think it is what it is. The serial number shows it started life with an LT1, will the serial number show if it's a Collector's Edition. The car has been repainted and reupholstered, shows about 90 some thousand miles, new top and dry tires, so, what's it worth? Thanks in advance.
There was indeed a 1996 Collector Edition (RPO Z15). It was available only in Sebring Silver with choice of Torch Red, Black, or Light Gray interior. It was also available with the LT4 engine but only with a 6-speed manual transmission; if you wanted an automatic the LT1 engine was the only option. All '96 Collector Editions came with silver 17" 5-spoke wheels. Sounds like your neighbor's car is a poseur.

There is nothing in the serial number that would indicate Collector Edition.
Sounds like you already know how to tell the difference between an LT1 and LT4 VIN and transmission.
Thanks for all the info. I'll have him check the RPO codes, and I'm pretty sure what he'll find. I think it's a poseur for sure. I hope he'll spend the money to put it back to what it is. I would be embarrassed to drive it like it is, sort of like riding a Honda that's been badged as a Harley. He wants to sell it and has it priced at 10,500. Personally, I think that's too much for a driver. Nice car though. Thanks again!!
[QUOTE=RollaMo-LT4;1573495099]You need to see if RPO Code Z15 is listed. If it is, it's a Collector Edition. Look under the storage lid behind the passenger seat for RPO Codes.

My RPO Codes on my 1990 are under the center console lid. Did they move the RPO Code sticker later in the generation?
