Default Is $400 too much?

Took my baby to the mechanic today. My oil leak is from the rear intake.
After 2000 miles, I've dripped 1/2 qt of oil. Not much i think, but that drip is hitting my exhaust and pissing me off.

$400 is labor only and includes the labor to install new injectors, O2 sensor and the intake gasket. The price remains the same wether I do the injestors or not.

I can use my own parts,

The guy said it would take 5 hours, that's $75 per hour.

Good price or not?

I wish I could turn my own wrench better than I can.

Good price IMO. I just paid 626 for the intake, the valve covers and cleaning the EGR up.

I did the injectors myself and decided against the intake. I'm glad I did as my vette healthcare provider had a booger of a time with a bolt. He had to finally drill it out and rethread it.

Or if you have a basic set of hand tools, and a T40 torx bit, you can do it yourself and use the $400 on a bigger better intake manifold, or what ever.

IMO the stock TPI is very simple. I think the biggest thing is putting the DIST. back in the right spot the first time.

I have more tools than I'll ever use.lol ( Know HOW to use )
Intake gasket replacement instructions here
http://jacnsue.com/Corvette/repairs/Intake_reseal.htm

But man...makes me very worried. I have a backache just from reading the "How to"
Anyone near NW Indiana that wants to help/show me? I'll even be willing to drive.lol (serious)

gaskets, whole set $28
O2 sensor $20
Injectors $170

I could live w/out the injectors, mine are fine and working good, but as long as it's apart, just makes sense to do it.

The injectors just slip in the fuel rail depending on what you bought. If you jack the front of the car, which you have to any way to remove the fuel rail to keep fuel from coming out the line , it is not bad to work on. Seriously give it a try, it looks far more complicated than it is. You'll be shocked, and you you will be more confident to do more stuff.

I don't love working on stuff either, but I am doing this all cheap as possible.

BTW CALDERONE, made a complete video of installing injectors and stuff. It is simple watch it on youtube, or find it here.

Agreed. It was my first time pulling the intake on the vette & total labor time was like around 4-6 hours. I did some porting on my intake base though

I got my 95 done for $300 labor and new gasket. $428 a little high try to get him down a little. One guy wanted $460 to do mine. I am getting near 60 so I don't tackle jobs like when I was younger, I guess I lost some nerve. I did do my A & B pilar weather stripping Saturday 8 houres start to finish not bad for an old fart I guess.

He is correct. The hardest part is getting the dist back on properly. I believe there is a write up on the intake gasket inside Jon's sticky on the injectors.

At least I think that's where I found it.

$75/hr is a good rate IF the guy is well versed in Vettes. The last Vette mechanic I used was $80 and well worth it. As long as they know Vettes, they can do what you need faster than a shop that doesnt know the tricks. This guy changed both rear wheel bearing assemblies in 2 hours. He charges what it takes him, not what the labor book lists.

That's a good price. I still recall my first CI in BG when the fellas replaced my leaking intake gasket in the parking lot of the Baymont Motel. Now that's love!

I am by no way down playing your work any time you turn your own wrenches its great. However big difference between doing a LT1 intake and a L98 intake Let me re-phrase that there is a huge difference

The best way to get the Dizzy back in is to set it on TDC #1, then set an alinement mark before you take it out, makes life much eaiser

Kimmer, try $135 on Monument Ave!!! Or $125 in Walnut Creek!!! You know of any good shops that won't rip us off when a C4 rolls in?

To the OP, $75 seems fair. Hopefully the work is good.

[QUOTE=ch@0s;1573708682]He's saying ur comparing apples to oranges the TPI is more complicated than a LT1.[/QUOT The point of my original post was not compairing apples to oranges I was saying to shop around for a good price and good work . The Corvette Tax can bite you if you let it. The owner of the shop where I go owns a 2006 Vette and charges $65 an hour. The first price I got for more money was from a guy who drives a pick up. That's what I am talken about
