I know this sounds like a dumb question but i was asked and really didnt have an answer. I have an 87 vette and was asked what is the big square bubble on the dash on the passenger side ? I noticed on some dash kits that it has been removed. Just curious thanks
Just kidding of course....most of us asked the same question at some point......I think it was referred to as a "crash pad" at one time....maybe an 80's precursor to air bags. Most of us call it the "bread box"....although my last loaf of bread bore no resemblance to it.
Have you ever noticed that when someone who's never ridden in a Corvette....particularly an early C4....gets their first ride in the passenger seat, that the first thing they do is grab the bread box and try to wiggle it back and forth? I had it happen on several occasions when I had my 84. I wanted to put a big sign on it that said "ejection seat....grab only in emergency"

If you are going to remove it, good luck getting to the screws that hold it from the rear. Its a bit of a PITA to get off. . Originaly, GM was going to put a air bag there but the legislation failed to materialize, so this is what we are left with.

Pulling the dash pad off gives you a little more access, but plan on some skinned knuckles. In fact, you might want to just go ahead and put the band-aids on before you start.
that's huge! and only filled with fresh air huh? interesting. I can see why people remove them.
I think a little more than fresh air When you press on it there's fairly stiff resistance, probably foam packed. Collision wise, I don't think it would offer much in the way of protection.
