I went to my local Tire guy to get a quote a set of Kumhos and He told me He discontinued them because He had some blowout problems?
I've been running them for over 15 years and not 1 issue?
Anyone hear of anything like this?
Khumo is franchising, like a Good Year or Firestone, so they are starting to cut back distribution to some generic dealers (so I was told by the first Franchise around the corner from me). Haven't run mine long, but have them on both Vettes and the wifes Beamer, which we've put a couple Vegas runs on and a good 12k miles so far- all is well.
I heard Kumho was having financial problems and I know some of their tires were on backorder for months.
I wanted a set of Ecsta V710's to autocross in but couldn't get any when I was ready to buy. Now I hear they're available again. But now, I am not ready to buy.
I had one on my Mazda that seperated at the seam where the sidewall and thread met. Luckily I was real close to home. We have them on the wife's Pacfica and they are holding up well.

Reason: fat fingers on keyboard!!!
i'VE BEEN using them for close to 9 years now. Nothing but good things to say about them personally. They're usually my first choice in an A/S for the dailies. Add in the thousands I've sold in the dealers I've worked without a single issue, I'd say this guy was blowing smoke up your bum.
That or they were installing incorrect tires for the vehicle (wrong speed and load ratings can overheat a tire causing a blow out).
I have run a couple sets of Kumho MXs and one of their earlier designs, and they can be great in the dry. They turn "diabolical" at the first sight of rain however, and so I don't run them anymore. No structural issues though.
I used them on my DD for few years and never had a problem with them. Their speed rate is accurate. They do hold at triple digit speeds executed only at the track.

Hey Dennis
Did a quick Google and there seems to be some issues and a recall on light truck tires. There were a few old articles, like 2005, 07 but I dont see anything recent on anything for our cars.
Kumho experienced some cash flow problems in January and still may be reeling. Kumho apparently bought out Daewoo (equipment, construction, mining) and somehow or another, sold stock back to the investors with a promise to rebuy at triple the current value??? Investors were forcing the issue to the tune of 3 point something billion. Not exactly pocket change.

I have a set of MX tires in 275/40-17 and they have worked fine in the wet and they also serve as track day tires with great grip once they get warmed up. Takes a couple laps to get sufficient heat in them. They will let you know when they reach a point where they are losing grip.
The current XS is supposedly even better in both dry and wet.
The only drawback to Kumho's is that the compound used in the tires to make them sticky is only in the top 60% of the tread. After that wears off, they do lose some grip and feel hard.
No problems and can get the XS in 4 days from my local America's Tire. Plus bring in the lowest price you can find on the web and they will match or beat it!
