I'm new to this forum and definitely need some help/advice. Just bought a 92' convertible. After some reading I feel like my speaker amps are bad and my cd head. Do I understand correctly that an aftermarket amplifier can replace the main amplifier and then unhook my speaker amps and just run straight through the speakers? Then can I add an aftermarket cd that will work with the Bose receiver? Trying to keep from spending too much on this system. I love music but at 61 my ears can't tell the New York Philharmonic Orchestra from Mudslide Slim and the Slimeroos. If I'm on the right track any advice would be appreciated. As it would on the wrong track. Thanks guys.
Before you send everything in at possibly a high cost, it would helpful if you specifically describe your problem. CD players can be repaired or replaced depending on your problem. The up-dated CD players will play home recorded CDs while the original CD player will not work depending on the recorder.
What is the problem with the speakers. Do they work at all or have squealing or whistling sounds. In order the get the most out of the Forum, details of the problem are needed. I can't believe all 4 speaker boxes are bad in the same way at the same time.
Help us to help you. Depending where you live in the country, there are other auto radio shops also. Filling in you profile will assist others giving information.
A good part of what I've read and "diagnosed" from is from "Factory Car Stereo Repair, Inc". My speaker problems are as follows: The left front you can barely hear if you put your ear up to it. The two rear just make kind of a squealing sound. The right front has basically no sound. My CD player won't accept a CD at all. The cassette appears to play but no sound thru the speakers.
I think the speakers have bad amplifiers. Some people say you can fix the amplifiers yourself. I've owned a collision repair shop for 35 years and have done a lot of repairs of all kinds in that time. If someone can give me directions or explain how to repair them I would definitely give it a try. Any suggestions on the CD would be greatly appreciated. The CD will not accept a CD. I can't tell if one if hung in it or not. All and any help will be greatly appreciated. I live in Louisville, Ky. Thanks
I cannot say who is the best car radio repair business. I have never used Don's so and won't make a comparison. But I do live near ""Factory Car Stereo Repair" and just walk in for service. I know the owner and some of the other techs. There up to speed, honest and experienced. I used them because they are close however Don's has a good reputation also.
Ok first, If the CD player will not accept a CD, it does need repair which is a similar problem to what I had. The CD player is a separate unit from the radio as the player comes right out. If you are interested, rather than getting a repair, you might want to upgrade to the newer player. It has the new technology which allows you to play CDs which you have recorded yourself. The original players have a problem with that and will only play original factory recorded CDs. You can look into that and see if that is an interest to you.
The speakers are not hard to repair if you have some basic electronics knowledge. Almost all the time the electrolytic capacitors go bad. I am in the electronics business so for me it was not very difficult. Over a period of time I ended up doing all 4 speakers. However I did let "Factory Car Stereo Repair" handle CD player because it it's a specialized unit and more complex, besides I wanted the updated CD player.
There is lots of info on the speaker amps repair. Before you make a decision do some searches on repair and check my link also and see if it is for you.
If you are going to repair them yourself, I can then give you some additional specific information with do and don'ts.
Received my cdm back after repairs. Have had radio/cd/casette repaired and am 95% sure speaker amps are good. With everything/wires hooked up I am not getting any juice to the pink antenna wire coming out of cdm and nothing nothing coming out of speaker wires. I am looking for the cdm relay and can't find it. Don't think I am blind but I may be. Any info will be greatlly appreciated. Help! Thanks in advance. Ted Samuels
My CDM is under rt side of dash. Do you still think the relay is behind passenger seat? Thanks Ted
You could have me on this one. I knew they were under the dash at one time but thought the 92 was like the 94. But now that I think about it I can't remember the exact year it was changed to the rear.
So I will stand corrected and watch for the right answer.
But the relay does supply power to the antenna and the 12 volts necessary for the amp operation in the speaker box. The radio head feeds a signal to the tuner which then closes the CDM relay. So several items have to function to close the relay.
You can always pull a speaker box out of the rear the get to the plug. Unplug it and check for voltage across the black (ground) and (probably) red wire. If you have 12 volts, then you may not have to find the relay. If no voltage keep going till you find the relay and clean the connector. You may be able to open the relay and check the contacts and the coil.
Unless you want to stay with the orignial eqipment, You can get an entire system installed for less money and trouble ($200-$300). Around here, installation is usually "free". And you can put all the old stuff in a bag and let it go with the car when you sell it. Unless it is a really special 92, an aftermarket system usually won't deduct much from the resale (won't add much either though) I've never been all that big on BOSE anyway, but then again I listen to classic country.
Sorry to be such a pita guys but I need to know where the fuse that controls the antenna and cdm relay. Found the relay finally but I can't believe it's bad. Now can't find the fuse for the relay. All help appreciated. Thanks Ted
P Colt and everyone else that gave me help on fixing this damn Bose Gold system. Finally got it. Only problem now looks simple. I had replaced two capacitors in the left front speaker amp and it is stronger than the right so I guess I will replace two in the right front. Those radios are a pain if you've never worked on them......also iif you have worked on them. Thanks so much guys. So glad I joined this forum! Ted Samuels
