I've been retired for a while and am over 70 and have rebuilt my 1995 LT-1 to high reliability. Since I do all of my own wrenching, I'm not real interested in learning a C-5 or C-6 or tooling up for one. The wrenching part is what keeps me young. When I can no longer drive it or fix it, I will give it to my Grandson.

I was able to retire at 50 - I'm 59 now - out of boredom I will probably get a job as the cart guy at Walmart before I turn 65. The Vette is driven maybe 500 miles/year and that's more by my 32 year old son. For all the little projects you will find time for, it is more important to have a decent P/U. There is very little at Home Depot or Lowes that fits in any Vette. And if you want to have any ranking amongst your peers (and maintain your AARP membership), you will need a Buick by the time you're 62. Assuming you have the means, you can probably also own a Vette, but don't count on driving it very much.

I'm 57 and been retired for 13 years. I bought my c4 because of it's sport car feel and love it. I have driven c5's and c6's and their both great cars, but will keep my c4. In the c4 I feel part of the car while the 5&6 I'm in the car. Would still like to have a c6 someday, to park next to my c4.

Going to retire in 2012. I like my 91 cause it is paid for and relatively easy for me to wrench on. The group I hang around with consists mostly of C5s and C6s. Several are Z06s and there are two C6 ZR1s. There is no way I can keep up with them but fortunately the threat of a Michigan State Police trooper nabbing them keeps them in line most of the time.
I will have to see how the whole retirement income shakes out before I buy a newer model.
I still lust over the C4 Grand Sports.

It sounds like you have your ducks in a row. I envy you. I hope that you can drive it and fix it for many more years.

I guess this will be a general reply as the others have said it most eloquently. I am 68 and still working although at the request of my employer rather than my own planning. I have owned C4s, C5s, and C6s, and have driven all on many long road trips. The 1st '93 C4 was a bun beater on any trip over 400 miles. There was nothing I could do to relieve the road "drone" and the cramping of the seating. I really suffered physically in the butt and lower back from my 1st 900 mile road trip. In fact, it took 3 months for the effects to go away. The '04 C5 was a joy to take on long road trips but still the tire/road drone was annoying and wearying. For the last 2 years I have been driving the '08 C6 on my long road trips and it is a quantum leap above all the other Corvette gens! It is truly a World class touring machine with gut wrenching punch when stomped. A study was conducted a number of years ago on motorcycle safety and it was found that chain noise was the #1 contributor to rider fatigue and discomfort. For this reason you now see all touring bikes fitted with either shaft or belt drive. I emphatically recommend the C6 gen to any drover who wants to take himself and the missus on a long, enjoyable road trip around our beautiful country. The noise is still higher than my LeSabre but it is not so fatiguing as any of the earlier gens. That's my story and I stick by it. Happy C6 touring!! Walt

I have owned Corvettes since I was 18. My first was a 57, which I bought used in 1960. Over the years I have owned 5 other models. After the 57, was my first new Corvette, a fuel injected 64 fastback, followed by a 67 coupe 427/435 HP...then a 69 coupe LT1 (dealer built). I kept the 69 until 1979. At that point we were in the "dark ages" of automotive history, and I wasn't happy with what the Corvette had evolved into, and gas prices were going through the roof. Well...we thought they were high then...those prices would be a real deal today...LOL. Anyway, I sold the 69 to a Corvette club member in 1980...and was driving a Honda...

Flash forward 23 years. When the C4 came out...it was like the sun coming out, after a dark and terrible storm. The world was right again. I followed the development of the C4 through the 80's, and 90's, and it was getting better every year. When the C5 came out.. I wasn't real crazy about it. I knew it was a better car...but it was hard to warm up too...

In 2003..prices had come down on the C4's...I was in my 60's...and I figured it was time to get back into a Corvette. I bought a very nice 94 6-speed coupe. The first day I drove it...was like turning back the clock . I hadn't felt that way about driving a car, since I sold my 69.
I felt like I was back in my 20's again, and it gave me a whole different self image.

My retirement came up in 2007, and I was still very happy with my 94...although I had taken an interest in the C6. Pretty soon I started looking at ads for used C6's. The more I looked, the stronger the urge got to own one. Finally in January of 2010...I took the plunge and bought a very clean Victory Red 2007 6-speed, Z51 coupe. This was my retirement gift to myself

When I was shopping for the C6, I started thinking about what I was going to do with the 94. If I sold it...dispite it's good condition...I would be giving it away....as the prices of C4's had really gone into the toilet. So....I decided to keep both cars and I'm glad I did

I feel lucky to be able to experience the driving satisfaction of both cars. Even though they both say "Corvette" on the back of the car, they are very different. The C6 is light years ahead in refinement, build quality and performance. It's amazing how easy it is, to get use to an extra 100 HP. However...its more like a GT...then a sports car. It's as easy to get in and out of as any sedan...almost like its catering to an "older' driver.

The C4 on the other hand..is more like a rough bad boy type of car. You don't just open the door and slide into the seat....you drop down into the seat...more like a racing car...or a F-15. You feel like you are part of the car...not just riding along with it....and it feels more like you are in a "special car"

As long as I'm able to drive, I can't see myself without a Corvette....or two...in my garage. The Corvettes keep me sharp....and young at heart, and I have gotten a life time of pleasure and satisfaction from owning and driving them.

And I agree with Mr. Vintage.. even with my post above and my "luxury" C6 touring, I still have a '96 C4 which I drive with pleasure at the raw feeling of handling and macho HP under my foot. They are different but the same thing. Only the Corvette marque could bring all these together. To see what an "old" guy can do with his C6 follow my link to my video of the July 2010 run at Talladega Superspeedway.. I'm signed up again for next year at Talladega only this year it's Memorial day weekend. Anyone interested, post it here and I'll give details about the signup page... I'd have to get a good deal to part with my racing " Great White " 95 but since it isn't a road car due to being a beast I plan on getting a fairly new Corvette for retirement and trips.

Nothing wrong with two or three Corvettes !

I might be the oldest guy on this forum (73) and I have a Quasar blue 90. My car is just the cats ***. By that I mean it is just great. It just gives a tremendust " bang for the buck ". The newer cars are faster than mine but my "90" can still rip the tires loose and if you are not careful the back end will try to meet the front when you floor it. Getting in and out is something else for us old guys, fall in and crawl out is how I do it. When I drive my Vette, nice days only, I feel like a young man again. Again I will say the interior is like a cockpit especially at night with all those orange dash lights glowing. It is just a beautiful car. Not gonna bash the C5 or C6 as they are just super cars. I had a 1990 Quasar Blue Coupe. Traded it on a White 1995 Convertible almost two years ago. They should bring back that color, I really hated to trade that car off but couldn't have three. Anyway I have the 1995 and a 2006 coupe. There is a Corvette feel to both though the C6 is more capable. I find that the C4 is easier to get in and out of than the C6. I must be me, but the door sill is a great lever on the C4, I can plop myself in and hoist myself out with ease, missed on the C6. "Oh", I just turned 62 this past Saturday (11th).

I'm 63, been retired for three years. Have to say that while I'll keep my C4 for a long, long time, the C5 is MUCH easier to live with on a daily basis.
The C6? Too much technology for this old fart.
