Hard starting problems on 89 c4. Previous recommendation was change MAF Relays. Changed both and sprayed MAF sensor cleaner into MAF. Now get code 33 and still having hard starts( will start back up after 15-20 min)
When cold, starts right up. Changed both relays but now pulls code 33. No power problems but engine light stays on. After it warms up and you run for awhile, have to wait 15-20 min to start back up. Cranks over as if no fuel.
When hot before starting hold the gas pedal to the floor for perhaps 30-60 seconds then release. Now crank. If it starts easier it's leaking fuel injectors.
Holding the gas pedal down vents the gas fumes. A hot engine requires less gas to run then a cold engine does. Too much gas when hot will cause starting problems.
An easy way to test if it is a bad MAF just disonnect it and try starting it up. Usually a MAF going bad will cause really rough operation as well as what you are suggesting. It will of course set a code but if it lights right off it is an easy test. Could be it is heat sensitive, causing it to erroniously metering out the wrong amount of fuel.
I would say also check your IAC valve... it could be stuck causing it not to start when the engine is "warm" so once you are cooled back down operating temps the car probably lights off like normal...
Changed out MAF Sensor and still have code. Discovered I may have wires crossed on the relays on the firewall. Light wire is to the outside. Any chance of damages to ECM etc if they are crossed.
