open the center console and look for Z51 in the list of RPO codes. Hopefully you'll still have the parts on there if it is.
If RPO label is missing, one give away to being Z51 on a '87 is the PS cooler fitted to the front of the cross member.Cooler was only available as part of the Z51 pkg
The VIN will not tell you anything about the options on the car.

The location of the Service Parts Identification sticker (RPO code list) moved around depending on the year.
When GM decided to screw down the driver's side rear compartment lid about the time that FX3 came along and went into the driver's side compartment along with the ABS pump, that left only the underside of the console lid or the passenger side rear storage compartment lid.
I can say that it doesn't work for '85s. I have tried 4 or 5 different '85s and they have not been in the database. A number of other forum members have had the same result with their '85s. Hopefully it works for your '87.

For 1987, the Z51 RPO was restricted to manual transmission coupes and included , B4P radiator boost fan, FG3 Delco Bilstien shocks, KC4 engine oil cooler, V01 heavy duty radiator, 16x9.5 inch wheels, heavy duty suspension, and fast steering ratio. Source: Corvette Black Book. Hope this helps.

All of those were available as standalone options on most cars so means little
The truck sized front swaybar and mentioned PS cooler are the best indications of Z51 pkg , not to mention the very stiff ride from the HD springs but any of those parts they could have been retrofitted by PO's

Just trying to help the guy do some forensic work to make a decision as to the configuration of his car. The fact is, the Corvette black book states those are the options included on the Z51 package so this information should be of help to the OP.
Take a flashlight and look at the top outside edge of the front spring on the passenger side just as it enters the spring protector. There will be a small tab with three letters. What are the letters?
A PS cooler mounted on the forward part of the front crossmember is a good clue to a Z51 car. The Z52 and base suspension cars did not have the PS cooler. Z52 the other components except for base springs, a slightly narrower front bar and could be had with an auto trans. Z52 also got 9.5" wide wheels.
Of course you can also go the National Corvette Museum and purchase copies of the window sticker and the build sheet. That will give you all of the information on what came on the car, what it cost (MSRP) and the name of the selling dealer. Build Sheets
