Thanks again for the heads up folks! After reading some cautious advice about 84's here, I'm now leaning toward what what previously my second choice....
There is some minor body damage that I can take care of, but I like the fact that the tranny has already been rebuilt. I talked to the owner, and am planning to see the car later this week.

As long as you can repair the 89, it's the better deal and car based on available information.
I feel comfortable with repairs on this car. The exhaust on the 84 looked nicer, that's what drew me to it initially. However, the 40hp difference betyween the 89 and 84 is nothing to sneeze at, and I can always upgrade the 89 exhuast later on. The owner of the 89 did tell me that an o2 sensor is bad, but I'm not worried about that. The mileage is 108k, as opposed to the 68k on the 1984. Still I didn't like the difficulty we had jump starting the 84, check engine light being on, and driver's side headlight not popping up. Despite the lower mileage, that seemed very ominous to me. I can't help but think that the '84 was sitting outside untouched for a long period of time, and thus all the nickel and dime problems it seems to have.
The kid with the 89 was using his car as a daily driver, and bought a Cherokee since he needed to get through the snow, and now needs $, and is selling his C4.

The thing I questioned about the 84 was it started once but wouldn't the second time. Check engine light could be simple or major.
I recommend buying a code reader. They're only 25 bucks for the reader and they come in handy. I know there are methods to use to get the codes but it never made any sense to me when the reader is so inexpensive.
Most folks dont sell broke cars cause its an easy fix, its one of many things thats wrong with it. Glad you have a differnt opinion, welcome to it. Id advise spending a little more on a newer model and losing the hedaches that come from older cars. OP seems ok with wrenching and wants an 84. Awsome, welcome to another C4.
Going from $4k to $7k is almost double, and most of these cars are 150k+ miles or need work. Not that the 84 he was looking at didn't.

I hate to sound so negative, but that's the car I would run from and fast! Is that a single exhaust or did one of mufflers tips fall off? Repainted black from red and it looks as though it wasn't prepped correctly. Why is the red still showing underneath? That will be a nightmare to fix as it will peel in time. The engine has definitely been neglected as the picture shows. Neglect of a cars appearance will most always have neglect of the drivetrain. PASS.

Just goes to show that C4's REALLY aren't cheap if you want a nice one. Deals can be found, but spending $5k on any Vette should only be for a hobby to bring it back to life or a track car.

That's for sure and it could be said for any generation of Corvette.

Very good eye! The single exhaust caught me, and that's one thing I was going to look at and inquire about in person. Yes, the red paint underneath and appearance under the hood really stand out when you have an outside person(s) giving their unbiased opinions and input. When I compare the underneath the hood appearance on that C4 to my C5, well, there is no comparison as I baby my C5. Thanks for keeping my emotions in check here folks!
I'm not saying the '84 should be the one to buy, but that '89 looks like trouble. Kid owned ,repainted etc. The '84 looks and sounds cleaner and worthy of an inspection but do you want a crossfire?
That car is not going to give you fun, or a return on investment so I would figure out more what you are looking for first.
How can you say that an early C4 is not going to give him fun? I think lots of early C4 owners would agree they CAN be lots of fun. As far as return on investment, they have reached the bottom price wise as any Vette does and in good shape, they should rise in value as any Vette does. C5's are now the Vettes falling down like a lead balloon. I recommend staying away from C5's right now for any investment returns. C5's are decent cars and there's nothing wrong with them other than that.

I wonder if someone coming from a C5 and never driven the previous years, would appreciate a C4? If they were coming from an Auto C5 to a 6 Spd C4, I could see it. Other than that, I'm not so sure.
Drove my bosses 58 and 69 and have to say, he can have em. They look cool as hell but drive like a tank.

1. Too many miles to be a collector
2. wing
3.205 hp in that car is not fun, going from a C5. it may feel fun with a Z51 suspension.
4.The price is fair not great.
My point is, if he wants a fun car get a modified one, or get a newer one otherwise parts will kill him to make it fun.
For it to have some kind of value he will have to park it and not drive it, and even them it will just be an old car with ONLY 68k on it.
I am not bashing the 84' just saying the poster needs to really consider what he wants out of a C4 before he buys one.
There are many variances of the C4 to choose from is all.
