i bought a set of front calipers and pads from ecklers and fixed the front brakes.now, there is an oil leak originating from the rear of the engine block and this oil looks like coffee and cream.the shop said my head gaskets are blown.i never had so much car trouble in my life and for what i read here weekly looks like im not the only one.these cars are not quite reliable if they require so much repair money.my wife is telling me to sell this piece-of-junk.i think she is right,I spoke to the dealer about the Subaru wrx I test drove few weeks ago and may just do that.i never had trouble with japanese vehicles.i like the corvette but in less than 4,000 miles this thing had cost me about $3,000 on maintenance and the gaskets may cost me another $1,000.ists not cost effective to fix it.to top it off the service engine light came on last night.it is clear, I bought a lemon.

What year is your car?
Do you have any mechanical ability?
A factory service manual can be your best friend.
How did the mechanic determine your head gasket was gone?
Oil leaks at the rear could be the sending units on the rear of the engine.
Water leak could be the steam tube between the heads.
Coffee&cream at rear could be a mingling of the two.
Its an old car, even a 96 is 15 years old, a 92 like mine is 19!
Its not difficult to read the code set by you SES light.
I did the head gaskets on mine for around $200, including new head and intake bolts.
First time took a weekend plus, second time took less than a weekend.

Good luck!
Always love these...I bought a 20 year old car that was either a) sitting most of its life b) had the crap beat out of it, or c) driven daily and now has 1xx,xxx miles...and I don't understand why it keeps breaking.
I am not sure what you mean by cost effective. But like others have said these cars are old. But if you did good reasearch on the car before you bought it that may have showned what you would be looking at.Every evhicle has things that seem to go wrong around the same time. I do not know what year yours is but some years are know for head gasket problems. Some are know for door panel problems ect ect. Good research would have given you an idel of these potenional problems. Check service record for the car to see if the any of the potentional problems have been fixed. I even check tsb and recalls before I by to make sure they have been done. TSBS offer a great insite to see the futher.
I do not think these cars are that bad. They are old and things break. It seems like you bought one at the point where things were going to start going wrong. I do not think you can buy these things for an investment or even to think you may get your money back out of. You bought a 20 some year old toy and toys cost money. So your choice is do you want to spend a grand or two more to keep playing? The thing is if things are done and done right you'll have a fun dependable car.

If a head gasket is an HONEST diagnosis of the problem then that could cause the check engine light (For a misfire).
Hey man its your car and your money to do what you wish with! But I love vettes... I wouldnt get rid of it for a ***. car... Thats just me though.
Did you ever take pics of that exploded caliper? Im curious to see what it looks like.
