Default speedometer/sunglasses

Is there an easy way to add an analog speedometer in addition to the digi-dash?

I've always been a fan of cheap polarized clip-on sunglasses. They look dorky but get the job done and don't cost much to replace when I inevitably scratch 'em up. The problem is I can't read the speedometer in my vette with the polarized lenses. I've been following the "no more digi-dash" thread but mine's not broken so a complete replacement is out of the question for now. I suspect the add-on HUD's mentioned recently would have problems with polaroid's too.

My prescription sunglasses are polarized and I have no problem reading anything on the digital display on my 87. I don't have a problem with the HUD on my C5 either.

Could it be that the clip-on's you have are the problem?? Are your regular glasses polarized? If so, that could be the problem. Try some clip-on's that are not polarized.

I've got polarized Ray-Bans that don't give me problems with the LCD displays. I don't know if that's a function of the glasses, or a change to the LCD displays in the newer interior (1990+) compared to the earlier displays.... just FWIW.

BINGO!

Your cheapo polarizers are to blame. The manufacturer cut your "clip - on's" 90 degrees out of phase from what would be considered "standard". I've purchased cheap several pairs of sunglasses that have be out of phase.

Way to tell:
With the car 'on" remove your clip-on polarizers from your face - hold them far enough off your face so that you can still see through them - now rotate the clip-on's 90 degrees and look through one of the lenses ....or......you can just wear the clip-on's like normal and turn your whole head 90 degrees from level........you should be able to see your illuminated LCD's now.

Works on LCD screens the same way....here is an example

Well...you get what you pay for, eh?

I hadn't noticed much variation in the polarization...but hadn't looked either. The trick will be finding the orientation that attenuates the road glare yet lets the speedo display through. I'll try your experiment. Maybe I can come up with a test I can use to evaluate the glasses on the rack at the local army surplus (the only place I can find 'em these days).

Thanks.
