Default c4 aircon

Hi all,

I have just had a problem with my C4 Aircon pump being almost torn out of the engine bay. I since discovered there where no addition brackets supporting the rear and front of pump. My question is are these additional brackets required? The brackets were not on the car when purchased and I have covered several miles in the car with no problem. The car went in for service and they fitted a new serpentine belt. Has anyone else had these problems.

Regards Rod

I'd guess the compressor seized. There is a rear bracket or brace, but that's to quell vibration. Movement like you describe is usually because it locked up and may have broken the mounting bracket which holds the compressor with 4 bolts. The other possibility is whomever installed the belt broke the bracket. Compressor is easy enough to remove so that you can check it out and I'd do that if that shaft is still turning. You don't have to discharge or disconnect hoses. Just unbolt it and the clamp on the Accumulator - lift it all up and set/move it aside. This will give you a good look at the bracket.

Hi SunCr

On removal of aircon pump the alloy bracket was broken at all attachment points. After the incident, found that the rear brace was not fitted at all. Whether this contributed or not is a mystery as I would of thought the alloy bracket would have been strong enough with out it. The airconditioning was working at the time but I didnt check to see if it had seized. I'm still waiting for parts as in Australia. It's all most impossible to get a new aircon pump mount. (luckily i found one) Still haven't sourced a brace here yet. Ecklers have a chrome one, might get that flown out here if I can't get one.

Thankyou for responding with helpfull suggestions.

Regards Rod

P.S. This is my first vette which I have been restoring for the last 6 months

The AC bracket is not one of the strongest components in your Corvette. That you have already discovered. Fortunately it can be repaired, welded. by a component welder making it actually stronger that before. A new one is preferable but repair is possible.

Hi Muffin

Thankyou for help.

Getting a new bracket seemed in possible. However, was able to secure a good second hand one. When I get my car back i'll try and get the old one repaired and strengthened just in case.
