I pulled the console shift plate today on my '94 coupe to remove the radio. As I was putting things back together I noticed my leather shift boot (stock 6 speed) is loose around the shift lever. I never noticed it being loose before, so I assume I must have screwed up! Should the boot be attached to the reverse lock out ring? How is it retained? I can't see any clip or retaining ring. Was it originally glued to the reverse lock out? While I'm at it. Should the seam on the boot face the front or rear of the car? I'd like to reassemble things the right way. Any help would be appreciated.
I haven't removed any of my console items as yet, but my FSM says, "Snap boot retaining tabs into slots on shaft (manual transmission)". Apparently, the boot has tabs at the top that snap into slots on the shift lever. Hope this helps.
Well, the boot definitely has leather tabs at the top and the reverse lock-out ring has something that looks like slots at the bottom, but I'll be darned if I can figure out how they can be attached to each other. Anyone have a picture?
Mine started to do that except it wasn't the clips, the leather started to detach from the plastic ring with the clips on it, a drop of krazy glue fixed it and has held fine for 2 years so far
I think you're right that the leather must have originally been glued to the retaining ring. I'm thinking a couple drops of Crazy Glue and a zip tie to back it up, unless someone has a better idea.
Anyone know what size allen wrench or what is used to remove the super tiny lockout ring set screw on a 6 speed shifter? I cant even SEE the small set screw!
