Default Gaskets

I have 1991 L98 with a lower intake manifold leak so i figured i would do my own wrenching and save some $$. Got the FSM (the red one) and tools just need to order the gaskets. So my question is, is one brand of gaskets better than another? I was looking at a set from Ecklers for about $37. Is that about the going rate?
Also any and all advise would be most helpfull.

cheers

I gotta do the exact same thing - my intake is leaking (bad) at rear china wall.

And heres another vote for Fel-Pro gaskets!

Make sure that you dimple the china walls and use The Right Stuff sealant on those areas. Don't use the supplied gaskets on the china walls.

Felpro's +1

You could try rockauto.com to compare prices. If you have my luck no local autoparts store has the gaskets lying on the shelf.

Pick up a T-stat while you're at it. Do the TB bypass while you have it apart too if you haven't already done it.

Another thing worth noting is that you need to pay close attention to the lower TPI runner bolts and which hole they come out of. Some are longer and if put in the wrong spot can interfer with the pushrods.

Good Luck!

Jeff

You did good. Careful with the dimpling if you don't know exactly what you are doing. Excess hammering on a China wall can do more harm than good. I am not a big fan of dimpling, never have, never will and have yet to have one of my builds leak. Some swear by it however.

'91 uses unique intake gaskets which have retainers that fit into counterbores at the front and rear of the heads. They keep the gaskets from slipping when you set in the intake, maintaining perfect alignment and preventing the leak(s) it now has - at least according to GM's Bulletin. Your front and rear intake bolts will/should be a few mm's longer to accomodate the Retainers and provide sufficient torque. The gaskets are usually Dealer only though I've found them at Street & Performance, www.hotrodlane.cc though they were for the F-Body; ie, they didn't have the coolant restrictors at the rear.
