Default Questions regarding basic mods

I have a stock LT4 with 45k miles that I use for nice weather and cruising, and I want to do some basic mods to get a little more power. I need any suggestions you may have regarding these plans:

1. 160 thermostat
2. K&N with open lid
3. Cat back exhaust system. (BBTriflo is top choice)

Are there any other inexpensive mods that will help? Maybe a programmer for the computer? MAF foil? Fuel regulator? Inginition?

Any other suggestions with out going inside the motor?

Am I wasting my money?

Thanks for the help.

Hey EricJ, I am also a new LT4 owner. Mine already had the K&N filter, and Corsa pipes. I added the "open lid" to the K&N. I don't think I am going to mess with anything else. The car is a deam to dive, and I can't picture getting much more out of it...at least not that would justify the money spent.

Eric,

IMHO, It depends on what you want first.

If it is strictly performance, and your goal is to get more punch and the best bang for your buck, then I would invest in gears first.

However, a good sounding exhaust system seems to wake up the car and the driver, even it there is not a horsepower improvement.

I added a TB air foil for less than 50$ and think it was worth it.

If you do an Air Foil, K&N + cut lid, FPR (up the pressure a little and advance your timing...really needs to be tuned at the track), a good cap and rotor + good wires and plugs, and an exhaust system, you should be looking at a .5 sec or more gain in the quarter I would think. That is what all of that did for my 87 auto, and might work even better on the LT4.

yes you can do a 160(most of us do), but it wont help much without a Power Programmer to turn your fans on earlier.

One thing LT4 owners like is going to 4.10 gears, youll love it.
DONT buy the airfoil, its a waste of money, but a regulator, better plug wires (MSD, Taylor...), then think about headers. After that youll have to go into the motor to change the cam and port the heads and intake.

K&N - Affirmative
Cut Lid - Affirmative
AFPR - Negative, I think I'd recommend just buying a pressure tester gauge ($40) and make sure your pressure is around 45psi with the stock FPR.
4.10's - Can't comment on this mod (yet)
Cat Back Exaust - Affirmative
160 thermo - Affirmative, with fans reprogrammed definitely
Air Foil - Negative

Thanks for all the responses. The first thing Im gonna do is Thermostat, K&N and exhuast. Trying to decide between the Powereffects and the BBTriflo. The Triflo looks the best but I'm worried about the resonance that is talked about here so frequently. Think I'll skip on the Airfoil and the AFPR. Thanks again for all the feedback.
