So now that I am a family man with a wife, 2 boys and a dog I very rearely gt to take the vette out. I want to get a bike rack for the Vette since I do go mountain biking every Sunday morning, without the family. Does anyone have pics or suggestions of what type of rack to use?
You might have to install a trailer hitch and use the type of bike rack (THULE) that is mounted on the trailer hitch.
...with regular bike racks I've always had problems with feet of the racks resting against the car and causing scratches. At least with a trailer hitch and bike rack you're not touching the body with anything.
No, but most hitch shops should have the #. It's a class 2 (1" receiver). I have one, but I'm clear across the country. They bolt on fairly easily, and appears to be strong. The one I have came on a car that the owner used one of those luggage rack gizmos on. I tried to sell it to a guy with a 93, but when we checked, the gas tank frame is different on them, and it wouldn't work right.
I agree with the Curt Industries reccommendation. I had U-Haul install mine in Canada, the Catalogue number was 247208. It is a strong hitch, 1 1/4 in drawbar, suitable for bikes or light trailers. If you want to go to 2 in, you can buy an adapter. The smaller receiver makes it less visible. I would say you could remove it in 30 minutes once you practiced a couple of times. Getting the spare tire cover out of the way takes as much time as R & R the hitch. For a bike rack, I'd go with the type where you stand the bike on a platform. I don't like the type where the bike is suspended from thje top tube-it swings around too much. And here is what I say to those who think a hitch is not cool on a Vette, even if they are right: It's my damn car, and I'll do what I want with it. LOL.
Update: now the I have a hitch for a bike rack, I have been using the vette a lot more. As a father of two, the only time I get to use the vette is when I go mountain biking with friends on sunday mornings.
my mountain bike fits in the cargo area no problem. my bike though has a quick release front tire, so that's why (i'll have to get pics next time I ride). just fold the passenger seat forward, lay a towel or 2 to protect the cargo carpeting, and that's it. only catch = can't have any passengers
I road bike and have to remove front and rear wheels for it to fit and then my aero bars touch my shoulder while driving.
a guy I autocross with has these bike rack suction cups that hold his on his 350z. They are universal and easy removal. Called like c suction or something. Expensive though like 400 for a set. They will hold against all your weight though and rated for like 500 lbs a piece.
