Default I'm back - 3 problems!

1. First problem - a week ago the computer crapped out, it was finally traced to a bum modem OR a bum cable between comp and modem. Replaced them both since Roadrunner gave me both so don't know which it was. Cost - zero! Just missed all the goings-on here.

2. Second problem. Drove the Vette for errands Saturday, ran great, no problem. Got in it yesterday and made it half a block before turning back - tranny slipping like crazy. Checked fluid, right where it should be. Surprised it went so quickly. But this is back burner.

3. Third problem, and this is the biggie. Daughter & family in Tennessee took a nasty hit from the tornado last week. Good news is THEY are ok, only injury was a shard of glass in our daughter's foot. Kids were not at home and didn't get the twister. Her house got windows blown out, carport down on the vehicles, foundation damage, etc. Father in law's house on the same hill had giant hole in the roof, windows and porch gone, garage roof is gone and debris all over his '57 Chevy, etc. Father in law also HAD 6 rentals on the land, all totaled, one tenant trapped in wreckage for 2 hours but only broken ribs.

Our son has been down there since Friday while we dog-sit, he's coming back tomorrow and the wife and I are going down Wednesday. Looks like a lot of chainsaw time coming up - they USED to be in a wooded area and I understand it's all down over everything. No power, could be 3 weeks before they get it. Our son took our generator down for them.

The important thing is no personal injuries but we're still concerned. So right now the vette tranny is a pretty small item. Speaking of Tennessee, is HP Bushrod OK? I have not had a chance to look over the past week's postings and probably won't be able to before we leave.

Sorry for long post - I was suffering from CF withdrawal in addition to everything else!

Jamesnns love the avatar - now we've got a dog, a cat, a rat, and a psycho bear!

Vette had a replacement odometer or at least non-original mileage. Seller was up front about that - bought it from a Vette shop and he was not the one who replaced it but estimated it looked like the car had about 80,000 to 100,000, and I've added about 16k to that. What baffles me is going from perfect to serious slippage in 24 hours of sitting.

As for the OT stuff I had to provide an explanation here lest the pooch and Canadian feline think I've been hiding from my fair share of abuse!

Thanks, the Av came from my kid who sent it too me... I like it too.

Its REALLY odd that a vette tranny would just start slipping like you stated. They really are built like tanks. I'd bet it gotta be something simple...maybe you blew a cork and dumped ur fluid. Im FAR from a mechanic, but just seems odd. I'd take it to a rep. person and get it looked at...Ill bet $1.00 its a simple fix. I don't hear about vette trannies just dumping like that. (Cross fingers)

Wow...sorry to hear about all the misfortune, but glad everyone is ok. As far as your tranny issue, does the fluid smell burnt? Usually there are signs of slipping for a while before it goes out altogether and 116,000 miles aren't a whole lot for these. My guess is you have another issue.

Sorry to hear of your family's problems but be glad they came thru unscathed. I drove all the way from FL to get to tornado land before they hit. Luckily I was about 20 miles south of the nearest and about 60 miles SW of Tuscaloosa. I could hear the warning sirens going off. We were lucky but so many were not. It will be a long time rebuilding. Keep the folks in Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Kentucky, Virginia, Pennsylvania (did I leave anybody out?) in your prayers there are still over 400 missing in Alabama alone.

does the fluid smell burnt?
Just went out and fired it up cold. I would not say it smells burnt, a bit strong maybe but that's all. Level is OK so I didn't have a leak. I sat there with my foot on the brake and slowly moved the shifter through the range and made the discovery that I can't get it into 1st. I always use OD and don't do much else and have never tried to select a lower gear that way. Can't tell if the leather boot is so old it's preventing the lever from going farther or if it's a linkage issue. I DON'T think this has any connection with the slipping, just an interesting discovery.

(did I leave anybody out?)
I believe Georgia got hit also.

We were lucky but so many were not.
With so much tragedy in people's lives, and so much property damage, things like cars become almost an afterthought - and rightly so. Having put that in proper perspective, I will say no doubt there are a few less Corvettes in the world. It's a good wake-up to us all to consider the future safety of our families and property, and once those priorities are addressed, maybe some thought to our Vettes. But when one of those storms comes your way, nothing much less than an underground bunker will help.
