Default replacing my 1992 shocks

I have a 1992 corvette and I think i need to replace the shocks. its a bit of a bouncy ride, and being that the car is 19 years old, it seemed to make sense.

I'm just a 16 year old with a part time job making $8 an hour so I don't have a whole lot of money. my vette has the fx3 feature in it. first of all, what is the difference between fx3 and z51? and would it be alright if I put shocks without the fx3 feature in my car to lower the price of the shocks? thanks

I've just replaced my Bilstein FX3 shocks with KYB shocks (non-FX3). If you do this, you need to also remove the actuators from the top of each original shock, (keep them or sell on ebay), as well as the FX3 (Selective Ride Control) controller which is located in a compartment right behind the driver seat. It's a black box about 3" square and 1" thick, attached by a velcro pad to the side of the compartment. It's hard to see. Detach, uplug and remove.

The FX3 is the Selective Ride Control, which is controlled by a switch on your console. "Tour-Sport-Performace". FX3 adjusts the damping characteristics of the shocks depending on the mode you select.

If you buy Monroe shocks you will be doing the job again next year.
KYB seems to be a decent replacement.
When you disconnect the FX3 adapders in the front store them and the clips and all the other parts somewhere that you will not lose them.
In the rear make sure you keep the adjusters someplace where they can be accessed later or remove them like you do on the front.

Fronts are fairly easy, rears are a little tricky, don't cross thread the mounting bolts.

You'll need jack stands and a good floor jack. Should take less than 2 hours.
If you are in the ATL area PM me and I could help.

I just put KYB's in my car and I love them. They are decently priced at $40-$50 per shock and they are pretty easy to replace. A fellow forum member Elrick and I did mine and it took us about 2 hours. Everything was pretty easy except for the fronts. We had to cut them off with a sawsall. Even with the cutting I would say it is about a 4 out of 10 with 10 being the hardest as long as you have the tools. Maybe there is a forum member near you willing to help you do them. Since you are not old enough to buy beer, maybe you supply a pizza.
