Default Gas Cap

I received a locking gas cap yesterday that I bought from Corvette Central. So - today i took the new cap to meet my 94. I removed the original gas cap and put the locking gas cap on. The locking feature worked, but when I tried to remove the locking gas cap all it does is turn around, it will not come off. Can anyone tell me how to get it off short of drilling and cutting it off?

Insert the key turn the key a half turn to the left. Remove the key and then turn the cap to the left

I have a locking cap on mine. When the cap is locked, it will just spin and not come off.
Put the key in the lock cylinder and turn key, and remove. Cap should be unlocked now and should come off.
It will be locked again when you replace the cap.

At least that's how mine works.

I helped a guy in Belgium to buy a pristine 81 that had been used as a drag strip car. Seller replaced the mega horsepower engine with a stout 355. It was quick, sounded great and drove nicely when I tested it.
The crew on the roll on/roll off ship must have screwed with the car as the idle was cranked way up and it would not shift out of low gear or stop well. (He found out later that someone had knocked off the vacuum hose to the power brake booster). Since it only had a small amount of gas in it per shipping requirement he soon ran out of gas. It too had one of those locking gas caps on it. These are not common in Europe and he could not figure out how to get the cap off. Neither could those who stopped to assist him.
He called me from the side of the road and was cussing me and the seller
out in several languages! The seller finally calmed him down long enough to explain how the locking mechanism worked. Both C3 and driver are now fine and we are back to being friends again.
