Ok,
So Im installing my new carpet kit (I think I will make another pictorial thread later....) . The kit includes various pieces of jute padding. But I cant match this piece with anything thats currently on the car.
Theres two pieces, so that means left + right, but I still cant seem to match this to anything. Maybe the jute padding is generic for all models, and I dont need this one?
I vote driver and passenger floor, up towards the firewall
hmm.......heres a picture of the footwell padding.
As we all know, not many curves in the interior of our C4s. Thats what is throwing me, the curved cutout. Only place that has a curve is the rear of the door sill opening. Wonder if this piece covers the rear door sill and the outside egde of the rear riser/waterfall.
looks suspiciously like backing from the "premium carpet set" I just ordered and received from WilloxCorvette.com, which magically appeared in a big box claiming to be from Auto Custom Carpet, Inc.
meaning I have those same 2 oddball pieces (and more) and the same oddball question... "WTF?" . No instructions, no list of jute backing pieces.
All the forum comments I found about Willox carpet were complimentary, but as it now all lays out on the family room floor, I just don't see it.
Sending the big box back, let Willox sort it all out with ACC, inc.

What's wrong with Auto Custom Carpet? Honestly not trying to be a jerk, I just want to know what I'm buying before I take the plunge and buy it for my '84.

ok, heres my take:
The jute padding is clearly generic. It resembles the factory pieces, but certainly isnt an exact match.
The carpet itself, matches the factory pieces alot. I havent gotten to installing the carpet yet (sidetracked and stalled yet again), but I will report what I find. Right now, with the carpet pieces spread out all over my house, they seem to be a very good match.
My current plan is to down the foil heat insulation first, then re-use my factory jute padding (its in pretty good shape overall, and seems to be thicker than the ACC generic replacement) and put the jute down over the insulation. Then the top layer will be the mass-backed carpet.
I can say without a doubt that mass-backed carpet is the way to go. A few pieces in my complete kit are the poly-backed (necessary I suppose) and theres no comparsion. Mass-backed is definitely has more heft to it and will probably hold up alot better in the long run.
P.S. You wont believe how much carpet there really is here, amazing how much is crammed into our 'Vettes. I will post up pictures soon (I hope).
Please do yourself a favor and ask who manufactured the carpet kit before you buy it , there are very few actual manufactures out there , MOST SPECIALTIES CORVETTE PARTS HOUSES ARE JUST MIDDLE MEN AND YOUR SPENDING MORE MONEY THAN YOU SHOULD FOR THE SAME EXACT PRODUCT , TRY Auto custom carpets , trim parts , RULE OF THUMB IF THE COMPANY YOUR BUYING A SPECIFIC PART FROM SELLS HUNDREDS OF OTHER TYPES OF PARTS YOUR JUST DEALING WITH A MIDDLEMAN COMPANY AND YOU CAN SAVE TIME AND AGGRAVATION DEALING WITH THE MANUFACTURE DIRECTLY ,Also if you lay all the jute pieces in the car and still have an oddball piece left over , many times the people packing your carpet kit will throw in extra scrap pieces in the box so you have extra , It's pretty simple to see if you have extra pieces .I have installed hundreds of carpet kits , they are not exact fit you will have to do some trimming and glueing to make them fit right , TIP : IF YOU CAN LAY THEM IN YOUR DRIVEWAY IN THE SUN PRIOR TO INSTALLING YOU WILL HAVE A LOT BETTER FIT WITH LESS WRINKLES AND CREASES, YOU CAN USE STEAM TO SMOOTH THEM OUT ***DO NOT USE A HEAT GUN OR STEAM IRON OR YOU WILL BE BUYING ANOTHER SET !!!!!!!!!!! BEST BET =BUY YOUR KIT FROM ACC AND TAKE IT TO A LOCAL TRIM SHOP TO HAVE IT INSTALLED CORRECTLY YOU WILL BE MUCH HAPPIER ...
I wish i got those jute pieces for the footwells included in my kit. I went nuts trying to find a shop to sell me some jute padding. I ended up making my own.
I just finished a carpet installation on a friend's '88 convertible and that piece (there should be two of them) is for the sides of the console. I bought the replacement carpet (ACC mass back carpeting) from Willcox while they were on sale during their Spring sale. The pieces for the rear fender wells are similar in shape to the console pieces.
I also sent an email to Wilcox recommending that they develop detailed installation instructions with their carpeting sets as the job can be confusing and frustrating. They would gain a lot of customer satisfaction and repeat business by doing this.

Yes, there are two of them. Still not seeing how they fit in the interior, console or not.
Maybe they (ACC) mis-packed the jute padding. My carpet is for a 91 Coupe, perhaps they gave me jute padding for older C4s?
I agree, more detailed instructions would be beneficial. The instructions should be posted to their website, like their hatch weatherstrip instructions .pdf. The carpet is drop-shipped from ACC, so Wilcox really has no way of including installation instructions, other than posting on their website.
I think I will create a new thread on the carpet install, amazing how many people have done this, but info is hard to come be, Seems to be scattered across many different threads.
ACC carpet kit (mine for 94-96) includes a map of what CARPET pieces go where, a handy item.
Their included JUTE pieces (total 6) does NOT include a map, so the consumer is on their own.
ACC offers "instructions", but this single pdf is for years 1953-2008 and is generic for passenger cars and pickups.
Anyone see a Corvette with a back seat, or the "pickup" option recently? I thought not. I put a certain amount of faith into my purchases when a site says they provide something, but it doesn't always work out this way for us, does it. Buyer Beware. Live, Learn, and passing on your experience is the making of a good forum -- such as this.
If you want nice maps and detailed instructions on C4 carpeting and jute backing installation, check out Mid America Motorworks. They make their own carpeting from old GM molds, and they document their products (free downloads). MMA offers a cad-cut foil-backed jute kit, with instructions, $149, for heat/sound deadening. I know, I called them directly.
WillcoxCorvette was sympathetic to my complaint about the ACC kit, but as said earlier, they're caught in the middle. ACC produces a lot of the kits sold by other websites, like Zip_corvette and CorvetteCentral.
