Has anybody removed the 3 rear trim pieces, if so what is involved? It looks like the outer pieces are held by screws, but the center piece has the **** on it. Does the **** just lift up and off or how is the **** removed? Any help would be appreciated. Mine is in need of a repaint.

Yep. The top storage latch has a ****/bar that pulls straight up. It is a fairly stout "pressure" fit. But, it will come off. I suggest some leverage IF you don't press down on the surrounding plastic in such a way to break it instead.
Besides that and the screws, you will need to pull the clips off your hatch lift. Prop the glass up with a broom or similar. Pull the hatch supports of their ball/socket joint. I suggest doing these one at a time.
You will find two other trim pieces hidden under the side pieces. They come out with 4 screws. They form the bottom lip of the privacy shade track.
If you also need to get the shade out, stick a flatblade screwdriver between one end and the side panel. Pry so the end shade is pressed inward -- much like a toilet paper roll spring works. IOW, spring pressure outward is what holds it in.
So the hatch supports are just a straight pull? No other tricks? Found i've got a broken right hand side panel
You mean the struts? Yep, they pop right off. If memory serves me correctly, use a small screwdriver and compress the release tab and pull them off. Just have a helper support the glass or use a sturdy prop. The glass is HEAVY.

I had a look at my strut today, couldn't find the release tab though?
Do you feed the screwdriver in by the balljoint bit?
