Thanks man!

Comp said valve floatation/tappet bounce can undermine the hard surface, I think it is a bad cam, out of warrantee, but they sold me one at cost,....
Your lifters would be heavily pitted/worn funny if that was the case.
Being as they all checked out my guess is a crappy cam.
Thier other explanation was suspect, too.

In with the new.

and they want you to drill WHAT other side ?

the extra length shouldn't be a problem.

sometimes going to the dealer ...its a PITA...I know, but at least you get what the factory uses (usually).

there is no hole on the other side,

on my Summit invoice, not even on the Mallory packaging
quote:

"the gear is ONLY partially drilled, Installer must finish drilling after correct location on the shaft is determined"

why do they even bother t drill one side does not make sense, maybe they want me to drill it so that I don't have to shim too much

it's the old "everything fits almost" syndrome. I can't understand it, the one hole already drilled plus the existing hole in the shaft locates the position of the gear relative to the shaft. At this point I would return the gear and try to find a gear which is actually finished (not partially finished).

summit sells the GM Performance steel distributor gear drilled, for 0.491 shaft, part # ACF-10456413' for use with all their cams and crate engines;

would this gear be compatible with the cam you're planning on using ?

looked up the specs on Comp Cams 280 xfi cam...gawd..that's a lot of cam with a TON of duration : 0.576" / 0.570" with1.6 rockers; 280 deg / 288 degree.

I have to ask, for as long as the good times lasted :

how was the drivebility ?

what was the engine vacumn and was it sufficient for the power brakes and other vacumn operated equipment ?

and (if you don't want to answer this in a public forum I understand) did it pass California smog, or was this even an issue ?

I loped, timing affected the lope less timing... more lope

driveablitly was good with the low gear 7004 first gear, with the zf6 , between the single mass flywheel's lower than the dual mass inertia, take off would be difficult.

vacuum was on the low side and the brakes would always suck, one of the reasons to go smaller, maybe it's just the c4 corvette brake syndrome, every component was replaced in the braking system.

I have all the cats, it passed smog better than average, my tuning was perfect, in that regard, perhaps that helped...

I called summit and the rep can't explain why they would drill one side only, stupid I just got done drilling the hole, I really didn't want to spend the extra and wait for it.
thanks for the suggestion
