Drove the 84 to my Dad's for his 70th birthday and after we went for a drive to his office we noticed a "oil smell". Looked under the hood with the car running and discovered my water pump is leaking, about one drop every 5 seconds. I had filled up the expansion tank before I left and it is bone dry now but the radiator was full (after 991 miles). Am I going to be able to limp home or should I get this fixed before my trip? It's about 500 miles
I'm not even sure where the weep hole is. It's leaking from the bottom of the water pump like between the block and pump. Thanks
That's the Weep Hole. Using a mirror look at the bottom of the water pump shaft housing. You will see a small hole, maybe 3/16th. It serves as an outlet when the pump seal goes. Helps keep coolant away from the bearing.. Can you drive it home is a tough question. The seal is going, how fast is the question. If you are a gambling man fill several milk jugs with water and head out. Keep a sharp eye on the temp gauge, stop at 50 miles, refill, again at 100 miles. This will give you a measure of your coolant loss rate. Frankly I would not risk it but I am not a gambler.

Don't take the chance. You don't want to be stranded along the side of the road in those mountains. If you need to be towed you could end up at the "garage from hell" with Jim Bob and his boys.
