Anyone else have a problem finding a new steering rack? I've been looking for a new 1987 steering rack and all I find is remanufactured ones. These may be ok , but evertime I've bought reman parts it takes two or three of them to get a good one.
I'm guessing you'll not find one unless you are very lucky. There are rebuilders that will rebuild yours on a R&R basis. Been discussed here in the recent past.
I had to replace the rack in my 87 about three years ago. The work was done at my shop and I didn't ask for any particular brand of rack. So far, after three years worth of autocross events and track days, I have had zero problems.
The trick is to make sure that all the old PS fluid has been flushed from the pump, reservoir, and lines before the new rack is installed. Probably wouldn't hurt to replace the lines if the car has lots of miles on it. The lines can break down inside over the years and material will get into the rack.
Also install a PS cooler if your car isn't a Z51. A small two-pass cooler is all that is needed and can easily be mounted in front of the lower radiator support. Run the hoses into the return lines. Then use a good grade of PS fluid like Redline Synthetic PS fluid.
Turn One rebuilds racks. They say for you to send in your old rack to get it rebuilt since they say there are several different types of C4 racks. I had thought there was just standard and sport racks.
