Default C4 Tires

I have 88 C4 that needs new tires. The P255/50 ZR16 is no longer produced in a non-competition variety. A 245/50 ZR16 has been proposed as a replacement. It is about 0.39 inches smaller in width and about 0.19 inches smaller in height. (About 1 to 2% difference in diameter). Any comments on the advisability of this?

Would I be better off with a P255/50 ZR16 competition tire?

If you don't track it get a street tire, track tires wear much faster. If you want to keep the 16" wheel buy the streets, you won't notice the size diff. But if you don't drive it much get the competition, they handle sooo much better.

Discounttiredirect.com has Falken 255/50-16 tires in stock. They are a street tire not a competition tire.

I have a set of these and although they are not my first choice, I would consider buying them again since there are so few choices.

The BFG tires in that size are on backorder to at least September (per the Tire Rack web site)

Use this to determine tire size.

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Going from 255 to 245, your speedometer will be off by approximately
1 mph.

Thanks for your input. Checked with BFG and they aren't we'll see them this year.

Thanks. The calculator is helpful since I don't know if the speed input the to engine control is critical.

I use sumi's for the street and Kumho's XS for the track. The xs's are street legal but for warm weather driving only. They handle awesome. You can check tirerack.com to see if they come in 16's. Ok just checked and they don't. If I were you I would go to a 17" wheel. You'r very limited with a 16" wheel.
