Default Relieving Fuel system pressure

I'm changing my fuel filter and part of the procedure is relieving fuel pressure. All I got for now is the Haynes manual. It says pull the fuse for the fuel pump and start engine until it stops due to lack of fuel. When I pull the fuse, the engine won't start. If I put the fuse back, the engine starts and as soon as I pull the fuse it shuts down. The car has been sitting for over 12 hours. I assume since it's been sitting so long the pressure has been relieved and wouldn't start without pump pressure. Should the engine run a little bit after loosing pump power?
I probably should have just changed the filter and not gone through this procedure since the cars been sitting. Thanks.

If the car has been sitting I would have just opened the gas cap and released the pressure on the shraeder valve on the fuel rail.. This is the way I did my 89 and had very little pressure at the filter.. The method you discribe above is the proper one for these cars..Just wrap a towel around the filter as you unscrew the ends, this should handle the flow.....WW

Thanks for the reply WW.
I guess another question would be, should the engine shutdown right away when the fuse is pulled? It's like I turned the ignition off. Would it run for a few seconds?

with WW7. Remove the gas cap. Also releave pressure at the Schrader valve. Some times the car will run for a few seconds after you pull the fuse.

Just be ready when you take out the filter to loose some fuel. At least it will not be under 60 pounds of pressure .
