Being that my car is a NY car, and 25 years old, I decided that I would go through the fuses, and make sure they are all ok.
I actually found that the reverse lights had not been working because the fuse was popped.......
So anyways, I disconected the bat, and started one by one, checking each fuse, and replacing them. After finishing the entire fuse block, I found that the one for the reverse lights is the ONLY one that required to be replaced.
Anyways..... I hooked the battery back up, and now... NO START.... It cranks and cranks, but no start. I smell fuel.....
Soooooo, Im hot and frustrated, and wanted to know if there was any process that is proper to re introducing power to one of these cars....
If it was running ok before you did the fuse check, my guess would be that you created an open in the process. I would suggest double checking the fuses---both state (i.e. blown or good) and position (maybe you put one in the wrong place?)---and be sure the battery connection is good (though cranking suggests it is).

Is the service engine soon light on?
I guess its time to break out the test light... ha.
And yes the SES light has been on since I bought it.... and Im unable to scan it because the OBD port has been converted to the OBD 2 style, yet, the car is still an 85.... lol
So... I return all of the fuses I replace that were slightly coroded (after minor file cleaning) and I get nothing... i cant even hear the fuel pump running....... I use the but of my flashlight for a light TAP on the fuse block, and I can now hear the fuel pump run.......
Try to crank and nothing... I pull the fuse to what is labled ECM (who knows what it realy is) and also the one calle "engine"... use the file on them, return them and VOILA... it fires... WTF!!!!
This is getting quickly out of my depth, but out of curiosity...

Is the port changed or has the ecm & everything else been converted to OBDII? I'm not even sure how this could be done unless there has been an engine swap. Maybe someone could comment whether the paper clip trick works with OBDII so you could get the code(s).

Two thoughts on this...first, no-crank might mean VATS? Second, this sounds like a simple corrosion issue leading to bad contacts---multiple bad contacts apparently.

Good luck
VATS is disabled..... I can use a key with a chip, or without a chip... it does not matter... and I think the BCM (if thats what its called is updated) . The computer is still 1985..... but the PORT is OBDII
