Just replaced the opti on my 94. Also replaced the plug wires. Is it safe to start the car to test the opti before total reassembly? Car has no water pump -alternator or radiator and the a/c compressor is just laying off to the side. Just want to start the car long enough to see that everything is correct and it runs before putting everything back together.
No harm in a short fire up. Just dont run it longer than 30 seconds or so and you should be fine.
Back in the day, we built an engine stand where we could start our rebuilt engines and run them to make sure all was OK before dropping them in the car. We eventually worked a cooling system onto it, but initially, it was fire it up and run it for 2-3 minutes to ensure all was well and then drop it in the car.
Just make sure nothing gets tangled in the balancer pulley and all should be well.
Not only okay to do, but highly recommended. Just run it for a couple of seconds to make sure it runs smoothly, then shut it down and continue reassembling everything.
Yeah, Did that on mine. No problem with water with the pump off the engine. Just don't run it more that a min.& make sure nothing can get tangled up on the end of the crank.
The Opti is too big a pain in the butt to cover up with everything and THEN find out something's wrong. Best to see if it starts & runs smooth first.
Ok, so I tried to start the car and it was not very willing to start. Checked all my connections and all seems well. Tried to start it a second time and after cranking on it a little longer and giving it a little throttle, it started up and seem to run smooth. I'm guessing and hoping that with the altenator off and the other various sensors unplugged, the computer just was getting the right info to start it up right away?
