I had trans fluid leaking on exhaust in that area. It was a seal on trans.

I saw a Youtube video someone posted that looked like the same scenario but there was no explanation. I also held a piece of paper down to see if the oil pressure sending unit was sending out a fine mist, but nothing either. I can post a video of it if no one has an idea. I just don't want it to burst into flames on me but if it is some liquid just "burning off" it doesn't seem to want to end. Maybe something got in there over the 14 years it sat?

Thanks
I'm working on a '91 Vette that has sat for 8+ years and it too is smoking just like you describe. I see some smoke coming off the exhaust pipe and a lot coming from the rear of the engine on the passenger side. Just curious if you figured out what was causing the smoke?

I got my above mentioned camera today for my Birthday Terry. Tomorrow is supposed to be 6c, sunny and I'm off work till Jan. 31. I'll be checking out the area tomorrow and hopefully have a clear idea where it's coming from, but I am 95% sure it isn't from the valve cover.

Happy Birthday!

Here's some more background on the '91 Vette I'm working on. I thought the smoke was coming from either the rear of intake or the valve cover gaskets (as some suggested on this Forum) so I replaced all of the corresponding gaskets. After getting it back together it ran for about 5 cranks before the VATS system starting acting up. On one run I brought the RPM's up to 3K when it suddenly died and would not start. No Trouble codes so I was sure it was the ICM or ECM. Changed the ICM no improvement. Since there was a stored trouble code for the knock sensor I changed it as well. Fuel pressure checked out OK. I next measured resistance in the injectors and found that one was shorted out and another was bad (1.6 and 9.6). After pulling the electrical connector for that (1.6) injector and then bypassing the VATS using resistors from Radio Shack it started on the first try. I let it run on 7 cylinders for quite awhile and now I'm seeing the smoke again. I did also notice that the area behind the front drivers side CAT was glowing red.

Well. It appears that the smoking issues has been fixed !!! All I needed was for someone to buy me my flexible camera. I got everything ready, backed the car out of the garage, let it warm up, drove up and down the street for a few minutes, back in the driveway and I waited. I got maybe 20 seconds of the "smoke" then while I was in there with my camera trying to locate the origination of the "smoke" it stopped.. none... not a trace of anything burning off at all. I let it sit for a half hour and went out again, this time I let it idle with the heater on full.. nothing.. So it seems all you have to do to fix this problem is to buy a new tool. Wish my MG's were this easy to fix...
Maybe there was something wedged in the exhaust manifold heat shield and it's either fallen out or disintegrated..

maybe it was a buildup of some asphalt stones on the exhaust or some older oil from a previous leak.. my guess is that if the smoke does not return, it was a buildup of some old fluids, oils or road grime. you will often see that on a car that has sat for some time.
