Default Lazy Headlight

Good evening everyone,

I'm not sure how to exactly describe my problem other than I have a lazy headlight in the 'off' position. When the lights are on I think the headlight is in the correct position and the light works. When I turn the lights on I can hear the motor rotating the light then continuing to run/grind for a few seconds. The motor will run for the final two seconds after the light is already rotated into it's correct position. When the lights are turned off the motor acts the same way, it runs for an additional few seconds but it doesn't rotate the headlight all the way back around into it's closed/flush position.

I don't think I have a motor problem. I also don't think it's a motor adjustment problem as I have messed with the dial on top of the motor and have rotated the arm to 12 o'clock and it still isn't doesn't rotate it flush. I'm able to force, with a small amount of pressure, the light flush to the hood but it will not stay. When i have the hood open and watch the assembly as I push on the light it simply flexes the entire assembly but when the pressure is not there it simply rotates back into the position you see in the picture.

I did a search for problems with headlights but I didn't find anything similar to my problem. If there is a similar post I apologize in advance.

BTW, this is my 2nd week in the forum and only my 2nd day of owning a Vette!!

Thanks in advance for any advice or help!!

Greg

Sorry, I should have mentioned I have a '95 Vette. I will also try to take a picture of the pivot pin of the headlight as, to me, it doesn't look exactly right.

The bushings have disintegrated in the motor assembly. There is a great tutorial on the fix by ZRJuan. Try Google too.

There are several places to buy the bushings. Ecklers, mid America, etc. A nice weekend project. When I get home I will insert the link I have.

My advice is to buy the bushings and the gear to replace BOTH units.

I appreciate all the help from everyone.

I'm in the process of ordering parts now from both MidAmerica and Eckers. Most of their pricing is the same but I've found MidAmerica has a few parts Ecklers didn't. The bushing set is $3 cheaper at Ecklers though.

I'm not looking at shocks...making my head spin!!

You may also want to think about getting the brass gears so you dont have to do this again, if you plan on keeping the car around for a while. They are more expensive but way more dependable.

You don't have to remove the whole brasket assembly.

The gears are fine. The bushings are at Autozone or Advance under HELP parts labeled as Ford window regulator bushings. Perfect fit and a little squishy to absorb shock.

Both rebuilt and bulletproof for $14.

Get used to a never-ending story.

Replace the bushings. Their are 3 of them. About the size of a sugar cube only round. Everyone wants to replace the gears also which usually a waste of time and money and not necessary. Yes they are exactly the same ones for the Ford that go in the electric window assembly. I know cause I have a crown vic. I have found them at advance auto while looking for the ford part. Look for the how to somewhere on the web. Takes a couple of hours if your taking your time. Not hard at all.

Thanks everyone for the input, I am hoping to tear into the headlight this weekend.

I'm not sure yet if this is going to fix the problem. My motor is working fine other than it's running too long. When I watch the motor rotate the pined arm is will make it to Top Dead Center but it's not enough to 'close' the light all the way flush with the hood. Also, the entire assembly is loose. I can push the light flush and the motor doesn't try to rotate, instead the entire assembly flexes. With that said, i'm not sure how replacing the bushings inside the gearbox is going to fix my issue but I'm going to tear into and see.

Thanks again to everyone for the help!!
