If you currently have 2.59's, then yes, changing your gears is a damn good improvement. I ran 3.07's in my auto and loved them.
3.07's are a great street gear with the vette auto. Really makes it come alive, and they are pretty easy to find fairly cheap (lots of 84-5's getting parted out). One of the problems with going with the steeper gears is the L98's and LT1's max out at lower rpms, so unless you are having low end problems, or have modified the engines for higher RPMs, you aren't going to get much improvement going to deep.
Hey...Even with a 383 and a big increase in TQ, I'm not excited about 6th gear.
Use it on level/downhill grades. Have more fun in 5th -- when necessary. Both are, after all, OD gears.
Agreed... 5th and 6th are a joke with the ZF... Ive gone on a couple closed course spirited runs and 5th gear feels like youve hit a wall. 1-4 is a pleasure!
Also 4:10's are a great combination for street use. But if you do plan to bring the car to the track anytime, they are a bit steep. You will be crossing the traps EITHER riding the limiter or shifting into 5th.
I dont think you would be in 5th. With the stock 3:45 I crossed the trap in 3rd @ 110. You would probably be in 4th so it would be one more shift in the 1/4.

Its not a probably. Its fact. The car has been to the track.
I crossed the traps IN 4th gear on the limiter almost every pass.
As for STL94LT1 the difference is almost 1000 RPMS in each gear. This allows further travel and more mph in each gear. My rev limiter is set to 5700 because it is a stock motor.
13.001 @ 110mph 2.01 60ft. Crossed the traps in 4th at 5700rpm's with 4:10 rear gears. Thats the break down.
Basically full boltons... Too many really to list, but the usual stuff. Intake, e water pump, 1.6 roller rockers, complete exhaust, and 4:10's are the biggest things.
Autocross it might not be good because you may ran out of Gear and have to shift depending on the type of track. My track is tight so i basically run the whole track in 2 nd gear. If i were to swap i would have to shift to 3 rd at the end of the straight then downshift. End result lost time
