The window outer seal strip on my 90 'vert has completely disintegrated and I need to replace it. I have the factory service manual and I am following the instructions step-by-step but I've reached an impasse. It seems that I have to remove the door glass to get at the rivets holding the seal strip in place, but to get to the glass I have to remove the Accessory Mounting Plate. But to get to this it seems that I have to remove this panel that the door weatherstripping is attached to. It this the "water separator"? I thought that the peice of plastic was the water saeparator!! Anyway, it seems I have to pretty much take the door (driver side) apart to get to what I want to do. Seems like I'm going to damage the door weatherstripping getting at the AMP so maybe I should replace this while I'm at it since it is not in great shape. If I have to take the door apart is there anything else I should do while I have everything apart?
Has anybody done this before? I sure could use some guidance on this before I do more than I need to.
When I did this job on my '89 coupe I didn't have to remove the window glass but I did remove the felt window guide pads for enough clearance to to this job.
I didn't have to remove the glass either. I just put the window down. (1992 coupe).
Be careful when you drill out the rivets... if you're using too much pressure with the drill you can push through and damage the door skin and paint. Either go very light when you're almost through the rivet or put a piece of vacuum tubing over the drill bit that's just a little shorter than the bit, so that the bit can't go far enough to reach the door skin.
Ok, thanks for the help/advice. Looks like I'll be able to drill out the rivets but will have to remove/move out of the way the weatherstripping to get to the rivets at each end. It's not in good shape so I guess that I should replace it while I've got the door panel off. Not sure why the Service Manual goes through so much effort (extra $$ if CHevy does the work??)
