Fellow Vette owner
Was working on my 88 IROC today, damn thing was running perfectly when I put it up a month ago, now it wont start. Thought it was the coil, had a new Accel coil on the shelf, nope that wasnt it. Traced it down to either the coil pick up or the ignition module. Was in a pretty crappy mood knowing with my luck it would be the coil pick up. Decided I would go in town and pick one up and have the module tested while I was there. Pretty afternoon so I decided to take the LT4 and cruise on in, mood instantly improved.
Got to Autozone and noticed a C4 with the hood up. Dude and an Autozone employee were under the hood, as soon I pulled in he asked me did I know anything about engines and could I tell him what some parts were. Told him I would be glad to help. (Autozone kid was lost!)This car had not been worked on by Bubba, I think it was Bubba's car! Everything was hacked up. Wires and vacuum lines, cut, spliced, taped, I wanted to take a pic but didnt want to embarrass the guy. I showed him a couple of things he needed right away, he said he had just bought it to restore it and had his mechanic rebuild the TPI. The TPI was covered in sealant. He admitted he thought his mech had ripped him off. He went in to get his parts and I went and got mine. Came out and spent several hours with him in the parking lot getting the vacuum lines straight and trying to get the fan to work. Turns out he's an electronics guy and dont know crap about wrenching, we swapped numbers as electronics is my weak area. He said he had just rebuilt the atari cluster in it, if he did, I am impressed Dont know where the afternoon went, I was having fun. Got home, wifey pissed, I was all greasy and late for supper. Oh well... Think I'll give him a call tomorrow and have him bring it to my shop where the beer cooler is..... Maybe he can rebuild the tach in the IROC? I love tinkering on these things! Anyway, just thought I'd share, not too many C4s around my town anymore.

Neat story. I love it when a plan comes together after being friendly. Hope his electronics and your wrenching will work out for everyone's benefit. Plus I can identify with a fellow Corvette+Camaro owner. Maybe you can make it up to wifey with a nice cruise to the Gulf Coast for a mini-vacation with some seafood or visit one of the casinos -- three hours would be a nice drive each way. BTW, was wondering if you have ever cruised the Natchez Trace in your Vette? I used to live in Stillwater, taught at MSU, and would occasionally ride the Trace on my Kawasaki. Enjoyed the smooth and winding road with not much traffic. Have thought that it would make a nice leisurely drive in my Vette sometime.

A terrific story and indeed this is usually how some wonderful friendships start. Kudos for being willing to help out instead of dismissing them botha nd getting your parts...I've seen that happen also and it's a real shame. I think some folks believe having a sharp-looking car means you can have free license to be a jerk.
Again, nice to hear you have helped him out. Keep us all posted on what you find out with the C4.
Later,
Lee
