Default engine heat when parking

Corrected: Am I the only one who gets home and then opens the hood to avoid baking things under the hood any more than they already are?

Mine is 16 years old with 119k miles on it, and I have never done that.
Nothing has been "baked" yet.

And trust me, it has seen plenty of 100°F + days.

I used to see a lot of people doing that at highway rest stops in Korea.

Ceramic coat your exhaust manifolds/headers, it'll cut the heat by 50%.

Reminds me of one of the C4 classes I went to where the instructor advised everyone to install a new upper radiator hose before the summer driving season. That's the one part that is most vulnerable to heat and can really ruin your day when it blows.
Any of you old enough to remember when street rodders used to add a few washers to the cowl side of the hood hinges to let the heat escape and to draw in cool air from the base of the windshield?

No, just the meaningful ones.

When I say "bake" I mean all the plastic looms covering the harness and all the other plastic parts under the hood that are so dry after 20 years that they just disintegrate or snap when you touch them.

You are the only one. The rest of us have more important things in life to worry about.

Seriously.....I live in a very hot climate and have never even remotely considered doing this. I leave them idling in drive throughs in 118 degree ambient temps with the A/C blasting for extended periods, and have never seen any ill effects of leaving the hood shut when I get home.

I would classify this as abject paranoia.

Yup! I remember that setup treated me to the heart-stopping sight of the orangey glow of my first carb fire! Quickest 3-lane change and 70mph to zero stop I ever made..

When I first got my 84, I too worried about that. I'm amazed that the ignition coil survives being locked up tight in the dist cap in it's own little crematory, but as hot as it gets in there, it works! Probably be hotter without the side gills..

If I get home and I've been running my car for a long time in high ambient tempertures , yes I will open the hood to let it cool off quicker... I see nothing wrong with this and I don't think its a serious mental problem..........At least I hope not................WW

You are not the only one, I do it too, everytime I bring it back into the garage. It might be because I restored everything in the entire engine compartment though. But then a Corvette is more than just transportation to me.

I do it too, although is not for quite the same reasons........ I do it while its outside the garage for a few hours to let it cool so I dont drag the unwanted heat into the garage and house. If somebody thinks its silly, they dont have to do it.....no problem.
