There is numerous things it could mean. It is telling you the ECM has register an error code. Usually when the battery voltage drops below a certain level that will cause it and seems to be the most common problem. You can try disconnecting the battery for 10 seconds to allow the ECM to clear and then wait to see if it comes back. The ECM stores codes forever so it could be a old code.
I had the same issue when the stock stereo was replaced. The way I understood the problem was that the original stereo basically, through voltage, told the onboard computer that the stereo is there and alive. Replacing the unit left an unused harness wire that made an open circuit. The installer had to install a resistored wire to compensate... btw, it took the Chevy dealership to diagnose the problem so that the sound system installer could fix the issue... lots of fun...
My 92 had the SYS light flashing occasionally, like 3 blinks , then off for a while, 3 blinks etc. Another forum member told me it was an undocumented feature telling me the battery is getting weak.
I tested battery, replaced it, and no more SYS light.
